Many of you know I am an active anti-spyware activist.
Because of this I feel obligated to point out when companies may try to take advantage of peoples paranoia to get their software loaded. Here are some excerpts from an email I received today:
[header removed]Hello,
We wanted to contact you today to inform you that there is a strong likelihood that your PC is infected with SpyWare. “SpyWare” or “adware” are files that are put on your PC by companies so they can monitor your Internet activity. What they don’t tell you, however, is that these files can infect your PC causing your hard drive to crash.

This email pointed to a site that was offering “Spyware Nuker”. Spyware Nuker is a program that scans your computer for what it considers spyware, and tells you that you should remove them. It is offered originally by Trek Eight LLC (Limited Liability Company). To get the version that automatically removes the spyware is $30.
Gee, this sounds a little fishy, doesn’t it?
I’m afraid so. Its a New Spyware Tactic at the very least, and could possibly open your machine to do anything they want it to.
Sites offer this program up because they get 7cents per install (US) paid to them by Trek Blue… the original download location.
Be wary of emails offering free “spyware scans.” I recommend against using Spyware Nuker.
