Putting a cushion on the electric chair.

I have been borrowing space in my fathers garage for a good 8 months now, and he’s been pressuring me to get it out lately. I think he’s upset that I’ve only been working on the car I have in there a few days a month since I drove it in. The project? A valve job. A valve broke on my 1990 Geo Prism after about 200,000 miles… and about a year after I did a head gasket job on it. Driving it on 3 cylinders got to be a little annoying, so I cashed in a favor and put it where I could work on it in the cold weather… only its not cold anymore. I pretty much work on this car just to prove I can, and also because its an easy car to work on. Since the retail value of the vehicle is under $1500 its not like its a valuable commodity. Its also not like its my daily driver, another fact which my father has noted several times in the last month or so. Well, recently my dad started hinting about pushing the car outside so he could use the space himself, so I had to take the hint and get working on it again last week. Thankfully it didn’t take too long to get it going. The car started up for the first time in 8 months last Monday. It only took about 30 hours of work, and about $110 worth of parts. On the bright side I did get a lot of free beer and the stereo in the garage is pretty good.

After a first test drive I noted a few problems with the car:
  • Loud ass squealing from a loose alternator belt.
  • Cooling fan relay stuck in ‘always on’ position.
  • Vacuum hoses hooked up wrong, so MAP sensor getting no readings
  • Air conditioning didn’t work.

Well. Obviously we have to set our priorities on what we fix from here right? Found the broken wire for the AC compressor after about 5 minutes. The other issues are being resolved a little… slower. After I fixed this, I thought of some other things I’ve fixed in cars that because they affected my comfort (but not necessarily my safety). In fact, sometimes I’ve fixed these things despite other major issues on the vehicle that needed urgent attention. Does anyone else have this problem?
