Eod’s candor has reminded me of one of those little things I do. Some background, though: Much of nightly prime-time TV in Japan is made up of shows called (in Japanese) “dramas” – kind of a cross between a soap opera and a somewhat serious sitcom, except that here they have such shows have endings, so they run for 8 or 12 weeks with a definite story arc and then end to make room for other shows. I can’t stand them personally, but they’re very possible. Anyway, some Japanese TV is broadcast with an alternate audio track, called “bilingual” because it’s most often used for foreign movies that have been dubbed. If your TV supports it (and they all do) then you can listen to either track. Anyway, for most dramas, the bilingual audio track is used to add commentary for the blind, so in addition to the regular dialog, you’ll hear an announcer say things like, “Tanaka crosses to the window, looking upset.” or “Suddenly the police commissioner pulls out his gun”. The point is, when I’m alone or with my wife, I often add on these audio commentaries onto what’s happening nearby. Sometimes it’s a different way of saying something intended for someone nearby to hear, but sometimes it’s just a sort of commentary for any blind people who happen to be tuned in.
