Many Portlanders (particularly those that aren’t white) may already know this, but the Portland police shot another unarmed black person to death at a traffic stop Sunday afternoon. James Perez was shot three or four times in the midsection while he was still in his car, but they’re not giving out a whole lot more information yet. His crime was failing to signal within 100 yards of a turn. Some of you may remember that an unarmed black woman named Kendra James was shot to death in similar circumstances last May, after she tried to flee a traffic stop, and quite frankly most of the city is still pissed about it. The officer who killed Kendra James ended up getting cleared of all charges, although he was suspended for a few months, and is now back on the streets, protecting Portland’s citizenry (or at least certain segments of it, I’m sure). In the meantime, I’ll be putting talcum powder on my face when I go out for a drive, because even though I’m already white, a little extra insurance never hurts.
Show me your license and registration, or I’ll shoot again
