Despite my normal $100/hour fee I occasionally get talked into doing computer work for friends and family on a mostly charity basis. Part of this could be because no one will actually pay me $100/hour. I blame marketing and the high cost of oil.
But I digress. A few months ago I did some work for a relative that was having major spyware and adware issues. Every time he clicked on something a pop up ad for some male enhancement product would appear. In addition to the pop ups, his email was full of spam for various enhancers, stretchers, pills, and whatever you can think of. So, being the helpful (read:asshole) person that I am, I made light of the situation and said “Hey man… if you want it bigger just lose about 40 pounds. You’d probably gain a few inches”. G
iven that he was a large individual, and given that we both have been ribbing each other about our respective weights for a few years, he took it as the joke that it was and he laughed and made a few tasteless jokes at my expense. So a few days ago I see him again for the first time in months, and notice something dramatically different about him: He has lost quite a bit of weight. Apparently soon after I fixed his computer he went on the atkins diet and started to drop weight dramatically. I have to wonder if I helped influence the weight loss in my own small way.
I also have to wonder how long it will take before puns relating to ‘my small way’ show up as footnotes.
