Let this serve as my notice to the world that I am officially announcing my guess that America’s next imperial adventure will be in Venezuela. I’m guessing this will happen in early ’07 but it could be later, particularly if we elect a Republican or a hawkish Democrat in the next Presidential election, and especially if the GOP runs Cheney. Here’s my reasoning:

• A small, tidy war (like Iraq was supposed to be) might look pretty appetizing to the current US Administration
• Venezuela has a popular Socialist president with strong ties to Cuba
• The US public has a proven track record of not giving a shit about US shenanigans, as long as they occur in Central or South America
• Venezuela has lots of oil (often cited as the world’s fifth-largest exporter of crude)
• We have, in the drug war, a ready-made excuse to invade (remember Panama?)

Please note, I’m not advocating this. I’m just guessing about what will happen.
