When you hear the word hero, what do you think of?

• A knight in armor saving a princess from certain deflowerment?
• A soldier risking his life for others in battle?
• A person taking great personal risk for the betterment of mankind?

There are many situations where a man could be called a hero and I wouldn’t bat an eyelash in disagreement. However, the jewlery cartels here in my city (and elsewhere) have recently started an advertising campaign stating that if you buy your woman an expensive rock at great personal financial risk, you will be a hero to her. Ok. I can understand why a woman would be flattered by this behavior, in some situations… but why is it becoming expected? We’re not talking engagement rings here for crying out loud. Plus, just throwing out the word hero like that bothers me. As far as you bastards that keep falling for it: Quit mortgaging your houses and borrowing from your kids college funds damn you! Expensive gifts like that are meant for actual special occasions or for apologizing when you are caught sleeping with that secretary from accounting. Impress your lady the way God intended… by buying a boat or expensive car as soon as you turn 40 and never letting them touch it.
