So you’ve probably heard by now that the mother of Levi Johnston (Bristol Palin’s soon-to-be-husband) has been arrested on drug charges.

There has been a lot of outcry about this story, and whether or not it is news. In fact, there is a feeling by many that this drug charge is actually the result of a witch hunt against the Palin family.

Is it a witch hunt? I don’t know. Personally if it is a witch hunt I have a suspicion that this was actually a result of trooper-gate, rather than Sarah Palin’s failed vice presidential bid. But thats a completely different matter.

Is the story of Sherry Johnston’s drug problem news? I believe the answer is yes.

How Palin deals with these issues is a reflection of the same ideals she was going to force on all of us. How she deals allegations of her daughter smoking weed (apparently caught on videotape) or Levi smoking OxyContin may be a personal matter, but when she is dictating drug policy and family values its something we’re going to be curious about. Hell, I still thought the news that her church wants to bring about Armageddon by force should have been covered by more newspapers. I didn’t want the rapture to come in a mushroom cloud…

Its the same reason I thought that Dick Cheney’s gay daughter was news, even though he refused to talk about her. Dick Cheney’s gay daughter, of course, is being completely fucked over by her old man. Its a pretty good reflection of how he handles… well in this case how he handles everything. He fucks it over. Every single time I type his name my asshole hurts. I think I may be beginning to enjoy it. Dick Cheney. Dick Cheney.

But I can already hear the criticism… Why wasn’t I worried about Obama’s relationship with a William Ayers and Reverend Wright? Well, first of all because the claims were ridiculous. I cant stand and listen to claims he’s a Muslim along with claims he was heavily under Wrights influence in the same damn breath, and I cant listen to the ‘proximity’ argument for terrorism. Secondly, because Obama wasn’t threatening to invade my bedroom and bring about the second coming of Jesus in my lifetime by force if necessary.

Now that I have all of that off my chest I have to make a mostly unrelated comment…

I have to respect the fact that Sarah Palin seems to actually live up to many of her own more controversial ideals with regard to family values. Lets face it, she didn’t pick her daughters situation, but despite their problems she’s still holding her daughter to those ideals.

She has a strong personality and in some ways took over the presidential race. She’s a fast learner (photographic memory helps) but, in my opinion, misled.

I do wish the best to Levi Johnston and his family. Drug addiction is a horrible thing to have to deal with. I wish Bristol Palin the best with her new child, and hope that this experience allows her to learn from her past mistakes. Finally, I hope that Sarah Palin also learns from this, and finds a use for her photographic memory outside of politics. At the very least maybe it will help bring about some education about birth control.
