Comfortable With Conformity

August 23rd Thursday night First of all, thanks to everyone who wrote to me about my new job. I jumped up and down when I got the news, just like I said I would. Then I promptly went to Ross and bought an outfit (shoes included) for tomorrow. I am so excited about this second stage of my life-- the after-college stage. The stage in which I support myself (well, not really on $9.50 an hour, but enough to save for a car), meet co-workers, work in an office and get my nails done. The last time I got my nails done I was nine years old, in the Dominican Republic, so that doesn't really count. Damn, I want to get a manicure. Anyway, I'm relieved. Everyone is relieved. My mom called at least six of her family members to spread the news. In our family, everything is a big deal. Let me put my dad's side-- the side that lives in Miami-- in perspective. My cousin Scott, who is 28, just got fired from Target. My cousin Chad, who is over 30, works at Brooks Brothers at the mall. My cousin Cheryl, who's 31, is married to a black man (frowned upon in a Jewish family), is cheating on him, and just got fired from her truck driving job. Her sister, Heather, who's 29, has two kids and no husband. So, me getting an office job and having a college degree is a big deal. Oh my god, I have to go to bed early. How weird. It's like the first day of school, but I'm the only new girl. The only thing I'm worried about is not picking up things fast enough. You know how some people pride themselves on being fast learners? I'm a slow learner. Things don't "sink in" until a long time. I mean, when I learn something, I know it, but it takes a while. Anyway. I hope I do well. I will update tomorrow night. |
