Hrm. So shall we discuss more "modern" poets? They all suck. Anyone worth quoting is dead. Except Cormac McCarthy. He rules."I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."---Dorothy Parker ------------------ -=-Bitch, sit the fuck down-=- IP: Logged |

I think there are a few great poets of our day, yes still breathing ... Adam Duritz, Tori Amos, even Neil Gaiman. Come on guys, a little imagination, eh? Just because they don't have a little pocket-sized hardbacks tied by a little yin-yang bookmark doesn't mean shit.[This message has been edited by MightyMon (edited 03-17-2001).] IP: Logged |

Excuse me? Tori Amos? Well, sure, let's just make Tori Amos our nation's poet laureate. And while we're at it, let's give an architecture award to the guy who designed the mall. No offense to people that like pop music, but getting raped doesn't make you deep.------------------ With proper thrust, pigs fly just fine. --RFC 1925 IP: Logged |

Damn Weis. You seem awfully on the defensive when the subject of rape comes up...had a little daliance or two here and there? It's ok, we all have.Shit man, by that last post, YOU should be the poet laureate. That shit was just MUSICAL. I, for one, like Tori. All her shit ain't about rape. That's what shallow people think. She's got a great line that comes to mind now: "Just because you make me come / Doesn't make you Jesus". *EDIT* Damn, I musta been on crack when I wrote this. ------------------ -=-Bitch, sit the fuck down-=- [This message has been edited by MightyMon (edited 03-17-2001).] IP: Logged |

Reader! Think not that technical information ought not be called speech;think not diagrams, schematics, tables, numbers, formulae -- like the terrifying and uniquely moving, though cliche, Einstein equation "Energy is just the same as matter, but for a little factor, speed of light by speed of light, and we are ourselves frozen energy." Now that's poetry.

"The flashing of a strobe light heart brings me to my knees and when the pounding hence does start my mind is saying "please"I'm running down a nowhere path screaming all the way feeling Fate's familiar wrath thinking it will end someday Liberate yourself from the shackles of life the burn of the flame shades the stabs of the knife I hear you presence I feel your breath your knowing hands are as cold as death How sweetly sounds the forkéd tongue to speak with lies in harmony sung with lots of flowers tainted black return to sender, bring them back These gaping wounds of this loveless ordead arouse passionate feelings of hate that is real So come on girl, lets have some fun defile your soul with a lesser one you think you like playing all these games well, lets play one that has a name" Now that's smooth poetry

"I will choke until I swallow... Choke this infant here before me. What is this but my reflection? Who am I to judge and strike you down? But you're Pushing and shoving me. You still love me and you pushit on me. Rest your trigger on my finger, bang my head upon the fault line. Take care not to make me enter. 'cause if I do we both may disappear. But you're pushing me, Shoving me. Pushit on me. Slipping back into the gap again. I'm alive when you're touching me, Alive when you're shoving me down. But i'd trade it all For just a little bit of Piece of mind. Put me somewhere I don't wanna be. Seeing someplace I don't wanna see. Never wanna see that place again. Saw that gap again today As you were begging me to stay. Managed to push myself away, And you, as well. If, when I say I may fade like a sigh if I stay, You minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way. There's no love in fear. Staring down the hole again. Hands upon my back again. Survival is my only friend. Terrified of what may come. Just remember I will always love you, Even as I tear your fucking throat away. But it will end no other way." -Maynard James Keenan- this is one of my favorite pieces.

See, now that's a haiku. Three distinct statements all creating one coherent image. That abuse of haiku above (tsunamitsu's post) is just horrible. Ugh. Might as well be free verse. Not that the poem had a bad idea, but form...oh man. ------------------ -=-Bitch, sit the fuck down-=- IP: Logged |

Not everyone in New York would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber. May his trousers fall down as he bows to the Queen and the Crown. I don't know what tune that the orchestra played but we found it sickly sentimental Can I have another piece of chocolate cake Tammy Baker's got a lot on her plate Can I buy another cheap Picasso fake Andy Warhol must be laughing in his grave The band of the night takes you to ethereal heights over dinner And you wander the streets never reaching the heights that you've seen The sugar that dripped from the violins bow made the children go crazy put a hole in the tooth of a hag Can I have another piece of chocolate cake Tammy Baker must be losing her faith Can I buy another cheap Picasso fake Andy Warhol must be laughing in his grave. part of my favorite poetry... yes I am addicted to eighties music.

Hrm. The Japanese part is correct, but I'm pretty sure there are true Japanese haikus not written about seasons. More likely I believe their true focus is supposed to be Nature. I would break out the ol' Oxford, but I wouldn't want to risk boring the shit outta everybody again...

Fuck. Soon I will be infamous for my fuckups. Perhaps I should rename this thread the MightyMon Fucks Up Repeatedly thread. Damn, I suck.Tsunami, I meant no discrespect, this above post was supposed to be a reply, not an edit. This is how tired I am. I not only clicked the wrong button, but the WRONG BUTTON in the WRONG PART OF THE SCREEN... damn I need to go to bed. Anyway, this was the thrust of Tsunami's post (if not the whole thing):
quote: By definition a true Haiku is written in Japanese and refers to one of the seasons.

quote: By definition a true Haiku is written in Japanese and refers to one of the seasons.
Absolutely less-than-true: one of the most famous haiku ever composed, by the Japanese master Basho, is this one: quote: Furuike ya kawazu tobikomu mizu no oto(translated At the ancient pond a frog plunges into the sound of water
Nature, yes... but not necessarily seasons. Another example: quote: Uki fushi ya take no ko to naru hito no hate(translated A sad confluence-- everyone in the end becomes young bamboo shoots
Again, Nature yes - seasons no. But the hell with all that Nip shit, let's post some nice Gaijin poetry: quote: My heart just wasn't in it not for one single minute and I went through the motions with her her on top, and me on liquor but it didn't do no good - well I didn't think it would (from Barrier Reef, by the Old 97's)
quote: Now my bad dream is my best friend, You were here last night but now you're gone again. I'm getting tired of you getting tired of me. Is this more than some old summer fling? And this thing we have, will it mean anything? When October rolls around will you sober up and let me down? (from Melt Show, also by the Old 97's)
The lead singer doesn't have the best voice in the world, but the lyrics are invariably awesome... and in a way, the (male) lead's untutored voice almost adds to the ambience of the band's music, because it really puts you in mind of one of those half-drunken nights at a hole-in-the-wall bar with live (local) talent where even though the acoustics are mediocre and the band isn't what you'd call polished in a record-label sort of way, everything's just fucking perfect anyway and you spend the whole night swilling beer and thinking "jesus, these guys are awesome." Highly recommended for Napsterization: Old 97's - Barrier Reef Old 97's - Timebomb Old 97's - Melt Show Edited to note that you'll need Napster v9+ and IE4+ to use those links - Netscrape apparently doesn't allow definition of link classes, from what people tell me.
