I'm thinking that the before cosmetics, colors, fonts, and stupid shit. We'll work on interface and layout. Those who have emiled me to be on the mailing list will get a email about this.

Please direct a lot of these flames/comments at me. I did the original design and layout and yes very very quickly. I also had no clue that penIs would still be around with this huge of a readership. (Nor did I think I would continue to work and double major and run this website). :p

I think what a lot of you guys are missing is we need feedback and suggestions of what you'd like to see. Not things like "This sucks" but "This sucks because it reminds me of the time my father sexually abused me, why not nest it under some submenu on the right side"

Fen came and coded the backend php engine (version 1 and version 2) and the random one liners, random link, and the flash. I imagine instead of saying that we didn't like the color on the flash, we suggested a nice working color, or a rough static image of what you think the menu should look like, that the mighty Fen would have no trouble whipping it up.

The Point: I think this came up in a debate/thread on the old message board. You cannot simply just say "This sucks" you need "This sucks because" and hell for good measure throw in "This sucks because ______ and try ______".

Damn - I need to get my learn on... obviously, it can be done on the bla webfarm ==> obviously, I need to quit beating my head against the wall with Perl, the original bondage & discipline language.

I see what you mean about koreanpride, but it seems lame to me. just two logos, and then long flat shitty design.

Wups - shows you how often I go there; they had a redesign when they moved away from UBB to whatever they're using now. Before the redesign, everything used to be pastel-and-chrome shades of blue, and you couldn't find a straight line or square corner anyplace on the entire site - everything, and I do mean everything, was rounded or curved in some way. Took freakin' forever to render, even on a cable modem.

Incidentally, a link back to the index page would be useful in this case... I almost never say that, but there's a stuff (like the BBS) linked only from the index page, and it's easy to forget that there's a link down at the bottom of the forum page.

Of course, then you can just type in the URL in the address bar again, but... a linkback would, in this case, be muy bueno.

Edited to note that I am a fucking retard, 'cause that's where the "News" link at the very freaking top of the right-hand link section already goes. D'oh!

jimbo-

The docs at php.org (or net, I forget) are fucking terrific- lots of examples. That's the main reason I could never really get into perl, because every doc I see reads like
"All arguments are assumed of type void unless the output of a static unpack(4) yield a typeof() equivalent to a registered type, as initialized in the perl.type.ini file."

when all I want is
"This command is good for splitting cookies into hash arrays. Here's an example:"

Oh, and FaRaN-

I'm sorry you felt that way. I wasn't lying- that wasn't all directed at you. I'm sure you thought it was helpful to tell us to change fonts and "thighten" (???) the logo. I was trying to say that actually, that sort of comment doesn't help that much.
Please feel free to submit design idea, even if only to spite me.

Public Sub FlameWar
   do until IsError([ratios]![signal_noise])
      [discussions]![redesign].Underflow
   loop
end Sub

Why should all the pseudocode get to be fake C++? It's about time we started seeing some VB pseudocode floating around random forums...

Hey... just fooling around with web design cuz I'm bored as hell... couldn't finish it up, but here's a random idea.

Addmittedly it's an odd shape for a main menu, and I'm not sure how it would fit in the page... but it certainly doesn't look like every other EN site out there.

I was thinking, for site layout... just an idea... here's crude psuedodesign:

Left frame, the title vertically, and a computer case at the bottom. Right frame, a stack of computer monitors, each being a part of the table of contents (top monitor says "news", next monitor says "articles", etc). Middle frame has the news, etc. On the bottom of the middle frame, in a very small frame of its own, (forgot to draw it, sorry) is a bunch of cables, leading from the computer case on the left to the monitor stack on the right.

Just a random thought. Feel free to use or toss as you will.

**Update: damn excelland... images should work properly now.

That monitor as a box at the extreme upper left, done in Flash, would be a cool idea.

Probably needs some sort of relatively subtle "click me" visual cue somewhere though, simply because it is utterly unlike "normal" navigational functionality.

I don't know flash, but if you want to use it, I'd be happy to provide all the graphics for it.

And heck, if it's in flash, you could have submenus come up on the display as well (like, click media, and a menu displaying "back, Teamfortress, contest, submissions" etc comes up.

all right, psychi! congrats
on giving helpful suggestions,
even if the graphics didn't work
quite right. i like the idea of
having cool, modded out static
monitor images within which run
a flash scripts.

however, i'd like to make an initial
comment here, that it would be cool
to have the theme of all of the
components come together in the
redesign. for instance, having the
scrolling middle part where all of
the posts go being in the shape of
a giant pen, or PenIs with a pen tip
at the botom, what-have-you. and
maybe making the bottons on the left
a font that is shaped like a pen-is,
which squirts ink when you click on
it. i don't know.

when i was at stile last week,
i noticed they have a wandering
penis jpg floating around the page
aimlessly. i think we would do well to
avoid things like that, they look less
classy, but i *did* think that wandering
penis should link to our site on his page
>;p

anyway, i'm not enough of a code pinp to
show you with graphics like psychi did,
but my schizophenically gifted mind has
plenty of probably impractical designs
bursting forth.

i hope this redesign helps to cement a
more specific stylistic theme for PenIs;
i'm sure with the pool of great minds
who have come together around the page,
it will be spectacular.

love for my codin' homies,
cyd
