...is now available at http://www.fileplanet.com

For some reason it's not available at the Windows ME update, but fileplanet will get you to the Microsoft download. So far I don't see much difference except that it screwed up my active desktop for a moment after the install.

Am I the only one really fucking pissed about having to enable Active Desktop just to use a JPG for a wallpaper instead of a BMP?

I refuse. I just convert all the damn things and let them occupy massive hard drive real estate.

Yeah, no shit. All it really serves to do is freak people out after they've improperly shut down their computers --- "OH MY GOD! IT SAYS THAT BECAUSE WINDOWS WAS SHUT DOWN IMPROPERLY IT MAY NEED TO RECOVER MY ACTIVE DESKTOP!!! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???"

You wouldn't believe how many times...fucking idiots.

I tried, just for shits and giggles, an animated .Gif on my desktop. NEVER, EVER again.

You take a 98-percent concentration of fuming nitric acid and add the acid to three times that amount of sulfuric acid. Do this in an ice bath. Then add glycerin drop-by-drop with an eye dropper. You have nitroglycerin.

It has been causing major stability issues since the day it came out.

I actually really like my active desktop. We use it to shortut our favorite websites. We have button links to http://www.assholecynic.com and http://www.pissedoffbastard.com and a link list to Pen, Tom Leykis, Stile and a couple of others. We've had very few problems with it. The only recent problem was losing it right after installing IE6.0, which took a milisecond to restore. It works for me.

I don't much like active desktop, but it is necessary to create my uber-desktop. Here's what ya do:

* Make a folder full of your favorite shortcuts.

* Drag this folder to the very top of the screen and release to make a new menu.

* right-click on the menu, and choose toolbars > desktop

* turn off the folder titles and filenames and so on.

* Turn on active desktop

* Find and turn off the "show desktop icons" option. (right click on desktop in 2K, it's in the active desktop properties in 98)

* Choose a background, sit back and enjoy.

Now you have a cool background with zero icons, and a dropdown menu of shortcuts and desktop icons that you can store out of the way at the top. I figured all this out because I loathe having to close or move windows around every time I want to find the my computer icon or run a shortcut.

But the fun part is when someone else walks up to use your machine "just for a sec" and the find that it wasn't on screensaver after all, there just aren't any icons. They will get confused and leave.

Of course that's just me.

... couldn't you just add stuff to the start menu and turn off icons for the same effect?

Yeh, you can add to the start menu as well, but I kind of like the shortcut bar. It acts like a quicklaunch bar, so it shows icons and you launch them with one click. But I have so many I want in there that if I use the regular quicklaunch bar then it takes up half my screen width, even with small icons, two rows. So I move them all to the top, which frees up my lower bar for minimized programs, and then only use the start menu for things I don't use very often.

Basically, so I can open really frequently used programs by icon, rather than looking for the name in win2K's non-alphabetical order startmenu.

The only good thing I've heard of Active Desktops is the background my friend has or had. Ken doing that uppercut with the fire (I forgot the name). Thats all it is. Ken starts from the bottom center of the screen, and does that punch upto the top... hehehe.

Hey fen i do the same with my desktop, its soo nice, i have my start menu on auto hide, then my icons on the left side of my screen, then my internet daily reads on the top all on auto hide. the only thing is that i used to have a desktop clock on my active desktop skinned into the wallpaper along with my icq floating button. but i lost the wallpaper that i had made for that so its not as cool hehe.

yeah, that's pretty cool, fen.
i don't run as many proggies as
you do, so i just have all of my
frequently used proggies on the
shortcut bar, and no folders or
icons on the screen. i don't
autohide the shortcut bar, though,
cuz i think that's just a pain in
the arse.

hrm. have you noticed that hardly
anyone is talking about ie6? not
that i care, i haven't been brave
enough to use it yet. >;p

oh yeah i have ie6 and i dont think its a big deal i havent seen any real changes
they have a personal bar now where you can have little shortcuts to stupid crap and play "media" through

but its useless to me
and its still not skinable so i dont like it all that much haha
but its better than neoplanet, wow was that a pain in the ass

and be warned!!!
if you goto download ie6 do not mistake it for msn explorer haha
i did that and msn explorer sucks shit through a tiny straw

Yeah, so far it looks more like IE 5.6.
But I would like to know what changes there are to the browser's DOM, and if any of them are even similar to those in NS6.

As for desktops-- the only problem with my arrangement (and its a big one) is that if you put your shortcuts on the top, you tend to trigger the menu when you go to close a maximized window. If at the left, you tend to trigger when you go for the scroll bar. The left is probably safer, but I kind of like the top.

Of course if you have a big monitor you can take the shortcut bar off autohide...

That's an awful lot of monitor... me, I'm pretty damn happy with my 21" KDS. 1600x1200@120Hz refresh = happy Jimbo.

Not that I wouldn't love to have a 26", but jesus, I don't know where I'd put it!
