Not that long ago the grocery store had to have some coolers replaced in the 'Dairy' section. Unfortunately, this also meant that the entire department was rearranged while the coolers were being worked on. At first this was not a problem.

Then they decided to block off the entire center of the department and replace the floor tile as well as the coolers. This meant that people had to leave the dairy department and re-enter from the other side in order to finish shopping for their dairy goods. To make the locating of the moved products easier, we put up large maps on both sides of the dairy.

The maps were very large sheets of butcher paper with fairly well-drawn (and to scale!) drawings of the store. On the dairy section of the map the location of the main items were written in legibly. There was also detailed descriptions of the easiest way to get to the other side of the dairy.

It was during this time that I ended up helping out in this department. I was busy stocking butter on one half, and was getting used to people ignoring the signs throughout dairy and the map over my head. I finally got to the point that when someone asked where something was, I would point to it on the map and say "Here."

Then I met a customer that completely baffled me. He was middle aged and shopping with 2 children. He walked up to me and said "Excuse me, but where the hell did you move the yogurt to now?"

I did my little map routine, stating simply "right here, sir"

"What?"
"Its been moved to this location here on the map. We're located on the purple arrow right now."
"But where is the yogurt?"
"Its right here"
"Fine. I'll just fucking ask someone else."

What did I do?
How should I have handled that?

If saying
"Due to maintenance on our cooling equipment, we had to temporarily move some of the articles to another location. We apologize for the inconvenience."
isn't enough, FUCK 'EM!

Your store did the best it could to minimize the inconvenience to it's customers. Some customers cannot be pleased, ever. Ignore them.

In Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where I live, they're completely renewing a part of the highway that encircles Amsterdam. Naturally it's the part where I live. It's a royal pain in the ass, but it had to happen sometime.

I spent an hour in the Amsterdam airport in June, had to have a Heineken... wish I had time to visit the bars downtown though... I've heard they have a better menu.

And by the way, when a customer starts cursing at you, you ask them to please watch their language, if they do the inevitable and curse louder and get more offensive you tell them to get the fuck out. I did that yesterday...

God I love my job.

The customer was incapable of reading a map without much difficulty and head-scratching - some people have next to no topographic sense whatsoever.

You should have either pointed to the location of the yogurt "as the crow flies" and given him a landmark, or, alternately, done exactly what you did - depends on how irritated with him you were.

But anyway, that's why he did it - too little topographical ability to interpret a map easily, too much pride to admit it to a grocery store employee.

There is no way to handle that. Every damn idiot on this planet needs to eat. The majority of them satisfy this need by visiting a grocery store. People who work in bookstores or home improvement centers, or even do tech support have a selected clientele and at least a better brand of idiot. Grocery employees deal every day with the halt, the lame, the criminally insane and people who buy lottery tickets.
Unfortunately, the greater part of the problem is that these hungry mental defectives somehow have the idea that only people with the IQ of a slime mold would work in a grocery store and treat the employees accordingly. You act polite, they take it as their due and treat you like shit anyway. You act rude, they get offended and try to get you fired. They get mad because the store is too big and they can't find anything or because you're supposed to have everything but you're out of some off-brand jar of spaghetti sauce.

The guy yelling at you was probably mad at his wife for making him take the rugrats shopping when he wanted to watch the game on tv. He's missing the second half because you hid the damn yogurt. You could pull it out of your ass with a flourish and he'd still be mad at how long it took you to find it.

Simple solution: Quit and find a job you love. Life is way too short to be miserable doing something avoidable.

... or if you're attached at the anus to the grocery store wage-slave bit, try working for a Publix. That particular chain spends more money on the store's appearance and the quality of the merchandise while simultaneously refusing to run those "bait" specials like "value cards" and et cetera.

Thus, Publix stores are slightly more expensive to shop in than other grocery stores, and make no effort to camouflage their expense with devious little low-IQ head games - thus turning off the dirt-poor and the terminally gullible from shopping there.

The net result is a far, FAR better average class of shopper than what's found in a Bi-Lo or Piggly-Wiggly or what have you.

I can guaran-fucking-tee you that the average employee of the average Publix in my area is a FAR, FAR HAPPIER PERSON at work than the same in any other chain - that's one of the reasons I go there; since I'm polite to grocery store employees, it makes me much happier when they're polite and cheerful right back at me.

A large part of why I shop there is the same reason I'd recommend working there instead of for another grocery chain - their business tactics cut down on the number of moronic assholes wandering the aisles. Also, the slightly increased merchandise quality and the lack of "do you have a PFC card?" make me happy... god, I hate those fucking "bargain cards." Marketing gimmicks suck ass.

I've actually had customers get quite incensed with me because we DONT have a bargain card, believe it or not.

Piggly Wiggly... haven't they gone out of business yet? But no, no Publix anywhere near here.

Well... My problem is that I've been there soo long that no one else would pay me this much for part time. Very few would pay me what I get here for full time. I AM currently looking for a day job though.

and alot of the employees have little to no personality.
you walk up the ring the items and stare blankly into your face as they wait for it to process.

this wouldnt bother me except that they bllankly stare at you in the eyes with no emotion no cheerfulness and no clue that your even alive or they are either.

i hate grocery stores

If you had to work 8 hours a day standing in the same spot, checking items through at 30 items per minute or faster, you'd be blank too. Grocery checkout stands are ergonomic nightmares. I have thankfully escaped grocery clerk hell, but the nightmares live on. You want blank looks, how about the customers who would sit and watch me practically climbing into their cart to get the shit they stashed in the very back? I developed lower back pain from picking up milk and soda while fully extended like that. Finally got to the point where I would sit and stare at them until they stopped balancing their checkbook or talking to their friends or beating their kids, so I could ask them to hand me those things.

Or the customers who think it is funny to have their kids "help" you check out by throwing cans at you and across the scanner? I've been beaned, especially in the hands more times than I can count by cans. Once I got so mad at a kid who wouldn't stop I told him if he threw another can, I'd throw it back at him. His mom finally got involved enough to make him stop but she wasn't happy with me.

Grocery store I worked at prides itself on being cheap, having a huge customer base without advertising and being so large that they have more different items than anyone else. It's like a warehouse full of food. Skip the little hot food delis and flower shops and satellite banks. And there's no discount card. They're cheaper than everyone else as it is.

I am a nice person, but that sort of hellish job turns me into a bitch. This is why I like my new job. I usually see three people per shift and they are my coworkers.

Well, I just posted a rather long rant regarding the great rewards of running a retail cigarette store, but it disappeared into the ether when my browser locked up.

Basically it is this: 65% of my customers haven't bathed since the start of the millenium, or longer, they insist that the rises in cigarette prices are my fault, because after all, I am the store manager, I must make policy for all of the tobacco companies, right? And of course it's my fault that they smoke Marlboros, because they didn't know when they started that smoking can kill them.

People don't understand why I won't meet and beat the prices on the Indian reservation, after all they sell cigarettes, and we say we meet and beat any competitors price (the fact that if you buy cigarettes on the res, and aren't a tribal member gets you a $250 per pack fine means nothing I guess), and how come I won't beat the prices in Idaho, it's not that far of a drive? The fabulous crackheads of the greater Olympia area never cease to amaze me with their fabulous hygiene and choices of clothing, and the patrons of the bar down the street are constantly giving me new and more colorful ways to describe body odor and bad breath.

I love asking people to remove their jackets so that I can reclaim the carton the have stuffed under their sweatshirts, and watching every 18 year old kid dig through a mound of nickels and pennies to buy a pack of Marlboros.

I could of course get a job in the field that the Army trained me for, and still make far more than the Army paid me to do it, but entry level would probably make me an accounts payable clerk in a crappy company making at least a hundred dollars less a week than I make now, and I doubt I'd get a 401k and health insurance for my whole family within the first year. And of course, moving up in that field requires moving to larger companies, changing employers more often than my customers change their underwear. Life's a bitch, ain't it?

I used to work at my friend's ethnic resturant. It started out ok... but then, I was asked to go in on Saturday... the busiest day. Hell.. evil hell. I said I would quit unless I was put in the kitchen. They obliged. I started at $6.50/hr.. in 3 months I got $7.50/hr. I worked my ass off.. prepping food... cooking food... garnishing food... serving food... refilling drinks... answering questions about the food (I am caucasian.. and the resturant was Indian(India Indian) and the people asking me the questions were also caucasians)... cleaning tables. I didn't mind it... I could get all the free Pepsi I wanted.. and I had my friend helping me with all the tasks(it was me and him and 2 chefs in the kitchen, and 2 dedicated runners) Then, "it" started. My friend and his dad(the main chef) got into an arguement. My friend left for about an hour. Yay.. I am left all alone. Hell.. then he came back, it was all better. This happened a couple more times, then they dragged me into it. I quit.

Anyways, I started to get upset at people. "What part of India are you from?"
"Haha, haven't heard that before. Oops, I have. Did you say you had the chicken?"

I hope my next job will have very little Stupid Person Interaction.

I never even saw that kind of odd little checkout register where the checker pulls the items out of the cart him- or her- self until Piggly Wiggly started installing them around here a few years ago. They still freak me the fuck out.

I like it better when I unload my own cart onto the little conveyor belt, just like Jeebus intended. (Keeps you from having to deal with the shit in the back of my cart, too.) Thankfully, that's the kind the local Publix still uses.

I guess the reason they started making registers so that you guys had to do the unloading was just to keep people from trying to "sneakily" leave stuff in the cart so they wouldn't have to pay for it... still seems damned odd though. Me no likey.

Well... the reason that my company uses those "strange" carts (they've been the ones I've used mostly) is that they want us to check everyone out fast

We have way the fuck way too many customers to deal with little old ladies unloading 2 carts of groceries onto a conveyer belt... and many many customers buy more than one cart full of groceries...

Incidentally, thats the only reason that every register has its own assigned bagger, rather than one bagger for 3 registers the way most other stores do it. We cannot deal with the customers bagging or the checker always doing it. We'd never get anyone out of the damn store! We always have at least 10 registers open as it is!

Yeah... my company has "checker timings" too. The majority of checkers are new and never actually meet the quota for "items per minute". The average bagger has also not been there for longer than 6 weeks. It makes for interesting combos. It also makes for pissed off customers when no one can answer their questions.

Hmm... on second thought... I'm not paid enough dammit.
