All that talk in China-wtf? got me thinking this morning, as I was re-re-re-reading Edith Hamilton's mythology-- would Greece, at the height of its civlization, have been such a bad place? It was a highly developed society... With many ideas on democracy we haven't gotten around to instituting yet.. and if there's ANY basis of truth in the myths, then it was considered a great offense not to offer travelers succor, be they king or shepherd.Surely that would beat out the middle ages and, as Baldric says, "dung for breakfast". fen IP: Logged |

I think the height of Greek civilization sounds like a pretty nice time to live (if you overlook the fact that it rather closely preceeded the decline of Greek civilization). In the societal sense, it was probably the most civil civilization we've yet produced. On the other hand, didn't they keep POW's for slaves? ------------------

Probly, but that's not mentioned so often in the myths. Anyway, prosperity is always built on someone's back, right? Being a noble in the 1400's was probably pretty cool compared to being a dirt-poor middle-african or eastern-european today.fen IP: Logged |

Hrm. Picking time periods to live in based soley on myths? Shit, I'd never want to live somewhere based upon it's mythology. Living in Greece of yore with those ideas, I'd be constantly afraid that Zeus was impregnating my wife, or Apollo was having sex with my son, or I somehow pissed off Poseidon and he was to blame for the floods and/or droughts that so recently afflicted my sheep.Personally, I'd love to be 8 years old and an uber-genius at the time or Ender Wiggin.
