Windows, with the assistance of the RIAA, want to institute a form of copy protection BUILT INTO THE OPERATING SYSTEM This is of course, in addition to the whole "database" that the operating system will be keeping in constant contact with.
This raises other issues: 1) Will any computer running XP have to have net access? 2) Can I install shareware without permission from the MS database? 3) Is there a Linux version of Black and White?
But mostly I'm interested in hearing views on the Microsoft attempt at policing piracy.-Chris Related Post [This message has been edited by Clme (edited 04-14-2001).] IP: Logged |

Ok... how about a monopoly thing? Will you have to use XP in order to listen to your downloaded music? I'm too lazy to do any more research. -Chris IP: Logged |

If office XP is any indication of their copy-protection "skills" they had better find another day job. All it took was a "superkey" to bypass the registration, and the rest was childs play. As for running XP.. not on your life. I'll stick to slackware thankyou.IP: Logged |

What a crockachit. Its past time for me to endeavor the task of learning Linux. Didn't Microsoft just get sued by the feds for this same principle, limiting what one can use on their puter to Microsoft crap? IP: Logged |

Why hop over to XP, and not staying with win2k? Is it such a difference in code we cannot run specific software on win2k in a while? I like this OS, I truly do... I'm gonna keep it Oh god please let there be a Black&White linux version!

Um. sorry guys, but the article is wrong. I found out about this because the Lockergnome newsletter linked to it, but then sent a retraction. go to http://www.lockergnome.com/issues/daily.html and read the third paragraph. In case you don't get to it before he sends out a new newsletter... "There's a bit of news floating around the Net regarding the dumbing down of MP3 encoding in Windows XP. However, it's come to my attention that this sound byte is completely false. In current builds, they're (apparently) using a simplified MP3 codec for testing purposes only. WiMP v8.0 will only support Windows Media files out-of-the-box. It'll also have a plug-in architecture -- so you should be able to use your favorite codec without a hitch. Calm down; everything is normal. " IP: Logged |

Here is the way I head it. WindowsXP will have the ability to rip mp3s at 56k quality (which is very shitty). You can use other ripping programs but mysteriously they won't run under XP. It really doesn't matter because by the time they release XP and enforce there yearly subscriber fees, etc. Someone will release a desktop friendly linux distro or Mac (listen up mac) if you are smart you'll port MacOSX to i386 based machines.IP: Logged |

Remember how they said they'd shut down napster? Even if (or when) they do it's unreasonable to think that usenet, irc and anonymous ftp are going away also. There will always be efforts to control piracy or at least contain it, and the fact is it's never going to work - see this as positive or negative as you will. As soon as Windowsmedia gets in the way it will be cracked just like css has been. And if you want to pirate that music and have a minimum of technical know-how, you'll be able to do just that.IP: Logged |

U r all fucked. Personally what does it matter where the music comes from. U all enjoy it.. U all deny that u enjoy it.. U r all hipocritsUmmm... as much as u would like to deny it, u want free and uncopyrighted material to be available for download, so at least be honest and admit ur limitations. Why should u pay for something that was written in the spirit of the free world and should be accepted as is, because that is really how it was originally portayed and should be accepted in that light, otherwise fuck off. Let me revise that: I dont want to pay for anything. Wow.... Its so good to get that off of my chest. -Chris IP: Logged |

I don't really mind paying for music. At least when the cost isn't outrageous. I remember that I saw a Slayer CD that had 4 tracks on it, being sold for $16. That is a bit much for 4 songs. Those are the cases in which I would prefer free music. IP: Logged |

If I really like a band, I will go out and buy their CD, not just for the music, but for the liner notes and al that good stuff. If I want to check out a band before buying their CD, I will download a few songs from Napster, if I like it, I'll buy it. Or, if I can't find a CD I want in music stores (some are getting very hard to find, especially some obscure 80's bands), I'll download the entire CD from Napster. Big deal. Who cares? And as for XP, I just bought Windows ME, and nobody supports it. It's just about impossible to find anything that is fully compatible. It works great, but there's nothing made specifically for it yet. I can listen to MP3's just fine on any media player I want. So I'm not buying XP until I absolutely have to have it. IP: Logged |

Bitchgoddess - I agree with you on the liner notes and whatnot. I like to have the CD Case and the artwork and stuff. Music CDs and other. My friend, to whom I will only address as "313370 -------- 7057170 |)0|2170" likes to get music and game CDs anyway he can. Be it from Napster and then burning, or from warez sites, or from borrowing friends' CDs and then copying, or.. go here : http://www.c0re.net/humor/supreet/leethimself.html and read about the other place he gets them, and some other stuff too. You probably won't understand the signifigance of this, so IM me and I'll explain if you would like.He was going to burn me some CDs, but I told him I like to have the book and case and stuff. He doesn't understand why. Oh well. Anywho.. Yea, about what you said about Napster. "The industry doesn't understand that Napster is a GREAT way to sample a band's songs to determine if you will buy the over-priced CD. Yes, I have downloaded full CDs before, mainly rare CDs (I DARE ANYONE to find me Therion's "Lepaca Kliffoth", "Siren of the Woods", " The Beauty in Black", or "Eye of Shiva") and import soundtracks (finding all the Neon Genesis Evangelion OST's, the fan made one, the live symphony one, and the singles for the movies, are very hard to find. And the S2 Soundworks 6-CD set.. I havent even found THAT on Napster or Gnueclus or Scour or WinMX or anything.) I still run 98.. seems fine. From what I've been hearing about XP, I dunno if I'll get it.. Only if CyberJo's was still around.. they got a beta version of 95 in like 93 or something, so they'd probably have a beta version of XP also. IP: Logged |

Yes, I purchased Windows ME. The upgrade version, not the full version, that shit was like, $200. My stupid rich next door neighbor bought the full version. And yes DOE, I do actually know what a local area network party is, I'm pretty sure the lancore he was talking about was some sort of con for lanning, right? I'm not completely out of touch. My question is, why are they releasing a new OS so soon afer ME? I just bought ME a few months ago, it's still new, if XP was so much better why didn't they wait and combine 2k with XP? It was 2 freakin years between 98 and ME, now it's more like 6 months.IP: Logged |
