Man, that fucking sucks. I really haven't liked AMD machines very much since the days of their 486es - they made a great 486, but they went way downhill with the K5 and up.

I know a lot of people are saying they've really turned things around with the Athlon and up, but... I've always had a LOT better stability, durability, and QA results out of Intel CPUs.

Anyway, I already knew that with the P4 Intel was resorting to AMD-style bullshit numbers games - ie, the P4 isn't as fast clock-for-clock as the P3 is, but they tweaked it specifically for "high numbers" on the clock speed to make the uninformed think it's s00p3r-1337 - but this damn clock-limiting shit based on the power intake is news to me. And it SUCKS.

Clock-limiting tied to a fucking TEMPERATURE SENSOR would be a really sweet feature - REALLY sweet - but tying it to the power intake sucks ass.

Here's hoping they ditch that idea fast and tie it to an external temperature sensor instead...

Yeah, I wondered about that Jimbo. Referring to 1/2-way shutdown triggered by a temp sensor. But why not just use mobo monitoring software to accomplish the same thing? It would still be moderately- to dubiously-useful at best. At least if it was an AMD feature, you'd be able to turn it off by drawing on the top of the chip with a pencil. :P

And on the subject of AMD slamming... The K5 wasn't that bad, but its choice of chipsets sure blew the big donkey. And I've seen alot of P133's blow out before their time too, but that's all in the past. Now go get yerself an Abit KT7A and a Duron 800, put a big heatsink/fan on it, and tell me you can put together a better cpu/mobo for less than two hundred bucks.

I'm not an AMD fan either. All the stories about installing win2k on a VIA-based mobo scare me. I hate that shit. I'm running a P3-800@900 on a BX board. Installation is easy. I'm happy.
There's no way in hell I'll submit to:
-Install Win2k, press F6 to install special IDE drivers.
-After install, apply SP1 and install the 4-in-1's and pray it doesn't crash your PC.
-Install various reghacks to maintain a semblance of stability.
-Keep and eye out for any new/beta/leaked 4-in-1's so MAYBE you can get a stable PC.
-Making your PC sound like a boeing 747 during takeoff because of all the fans needed to keep the temperature down to tolerable levels.

Of course, all my prejudices come from collegues who own AMD/VIA systems and reading about it on the ArsTechnica-forums.

I hope that when the times comes to upgrade, those AMD/VIA-based systems are easier to install and maintain. The Slot1/100MHz P3-800 I bought a while ago is the last CPU I can use with this motherboard.
When upgrade time comes along I'll probably have to buy a new mobo, CPU and RAM, so I'd like it to be nice and stable...

I'm with LamFear on this one - I'm perfectly willing to pay the money for Intel reliability. Cheaper isn't better if it means I have to fuck with the damn thing twice as much.

does anyone think it's a bad idea to take an old socket5 p100 and convert it to a K6-II 400 with one of those nifty voltage regulators that fit in the socket5 chipset?

Huh? I just recently setup 5 amd systems and no extreme problems. I can run my system with a 416mhz overclock jump with just the heatsink fan (running right now). As for noise, etc. IF you want case cooling, it is all about the type of fans you pick, what you pay for is what you get, if you settle for radioshack then you get radioshack quality fans. If I where to do just a wussy 100mhz jump like LaMFear then yeah I wouldn't need shit on my case either.

For the amount of money you dump into those intel chips, why not buy a tbird? Those things are constantly kicking ass and taking names.

You hit chipset mobo issues and as we have seen in the past, Intel much like Microshaft likes to use its size to push around other related companys, in this case Intel has constantly leaned all over mobo makers. We've seen them do it before.
