quote: Originally posted by Jimbo: Unfortunately, following what has always been the MO in Cupertino, Apple got jealous about the success of the clone manufacturers and began strangling them with license modifications and outright revocations designed to make it impossible for any outsider to make a better Apple than Apple could - no matter how much better of a job they were doing at it.
The way I understood it is that the clones where successful as you said but didn't make sense from a business prospective.
They didn't make much money off licensing the OS to these clone providers. So all that licensing out did was just cut into their market share. Also during this time Apple was changing CEOs like a mad man. They where also reporting huge losses (60 some million in a qtr) from the release of the preforma series. So apple aquires NeXT (steve jobs baby).. And brings back Steve Jobs.. Now with Jobs actting as an interm CEO.. He spins newton (remember me) off to its own company and then cancels it. Then Jobs went after clones.. The whole goal of allowing clones was to expand the MacOS market (They also toyed with porting it to the i386 platform), but instead the clones just sold to the existing market (never really expanding it) and thus ate into Apples part. So I thought I'd just kinda throw in some history of what was going on at the time also. I think it was a good idea to reclaim the mac market and I think it would of been better if they just ported the MacOS over to the i386 platform and left the hardware industry.
