Regarding This post:
1)Do you think I should just give up, work many many hours of overtime, and buy new shit?2)Is hand-me-down computing an acceptable alternative to spending money? 3)Do you have any "kludges" sitting around in your setup? (or any previous setup?) 4) Am I the only one that never throws an old computer away? (the garbage men wont take them anyhow )

Mac Plus was what, 8 mHz? What would overclocking get you? For that matter, I have a fabulously speedy 33mHz Mac Performa 636. I'd like to see Chris ghetto mod my vibrator. Overclocking would be a boon! Maybe mod it so it accepts A/C and has no batteries to run out. But that would be a shock hazard.. Ah well, not much worse than this machine I'm using! (and I really am just kidding on this one) -Bex IP: Logged |

The fan in my powersupply died, so I took it out, and set a desktop fan (from the 1970's) to blow into the powersupply. I ran it like that for about six months with no problems.IP: Logged |

This has nothing to do with computers, but it is a ghetto mod:I once had a friend that owned a 1982(?) Pontiac "Ghetto 2000" that had a knack for never getting stuck in the snow. According to my friend, the only problem with this car (other than the timing, starter, distributer, muffler mounts, rusted paint, and hood release that required one of the following: 1.) intense beating of the dash board or 2.) Shifting the car into park from drive, all whilst pulling on the hood release leaver), was the fact that it lacked a rear defroster. So one day, he set out to the local Radio Shack (his favorite store, until they started selling cell phones) to purchase supplies to "build" a rear defroster. After rigging up a computer fan on a wooden frame that was pointed at the window and a switch on the dash that controlled the fan, he had himself a defroster. Amazingly, it worked, untill one fateful night... We were cruzing in a cornfield with some of his cousins in the backseat, when some hair from one of his cousins got caught in the fan. Suddenly, the headlights started dimming and the cabin filled with smoke. We quickly pulled over and chris... er... my friend jumped out of the car and started tamping out a fire that had started on his floorboard. It seams that his wiring was underrated for the fuse and a small electrical fire had started from the power surge. That was the first day that I learned that my friend could swear in russian, 01d 5k001 ------------------ Why is it that everytime I open my mouth, useless words come out? IP: Logged |

All I have to say is that I have overclocked my p90 to 120 mhz because I was too cheap to spring for a new one. So here I sit, forever in shame.IP: Logged |

MrSelfDestruct:It wasn't drive to park, it was drive to reverse Also..the only thing I bought at Rat Shack was a switch for that particular mod.. And later... new wire and in in-line fuse. But yes, Rat Shack does suck now that they primarily deal with Cell phones. They have signs posted on their registers that say "Do not let any customer leave without asking about ------- cell phone plan!!" Anyone know any really decent chains/mail order companies that supply basic electronic equipment otherwise? -Chris IP: Logged |

Best place in Portland to go is Radar Electronics (they have them in Seattle also). They always seem to have whatever I need at a good price. You walk in.. and there is a counter.. You name off what you want and leave.. No sales floor.IP: Logged |
