Okay, here's the idea: Like it? Oh, another idea... check out www.desktopian.org, and look at the top right for five different colored squares. Click on them, the site color changes. If you don't like the orange of this layout... it'd be pretty easy to set that situation up with it. Comments welcome. i like te design myself, but i checked the site you indicated and didn't find anything. Granted, I'm severely drunk right now, but I'm sure its empty except for some kind of definition thing.- biggles

Where are you hiding the links to the message board, etc in that design?Just my two cents but I LOVED the design with the round list of links (Articles, Cams, etc). But this is pretty snazzy too. Except for the orange. Are you eliminating the little box of random text under the current logo? IP: Logged |

Okay, some explanation:The Random Slogans box is the "our members have members" part. It starts off as "our members have members" every time, similar to the way it starts with the outdated staff names now, and switches over to the random captions after a few seconds. So they're still there. The Messageboard link would be directly on the top menu bar - where "news archives articles" is now. The table of contents isn't finalized yet, I'll leave that to eod and crew. All the other things - the BBS link, TFC server, stuff like that, would ALL be on pages other than the main page, and would be accessable through the main table of contents. This is to reduce clutter, since there's no way to add them all in in the main menu without it becoming super-cluttered. To Bex, I loved the Rotator links thing too. It's very tall, though, and I don't think I can make it much shorter and still look good. I'll make an effort though. The orange, we could make that dynamically changeable for user preference, if we really wanted. (the desktopian.org idea) IP: Logged |

1. The rotator thing was a neat gadget, but it was a... gadget. Totally agree that it was way too tall and would burn too much screen real estate.2. Placing links on pages other than the main page = DRASTICALLY reduced traffic through those links. As long as the codebase was SUPER lean, an automagically expanding menu in DHTML or Flash would be okay - but if you pull stuff of the index page, trust me the traffic to them is going to PLUMMET. Could you make the rotator a horizontal semicircle instead of a circle and possibly still have it work but be shorter? Perhaps use some sort of icon instead of the name of the link to save space until it was selected and then pop up the name? I liked the layout where the link of the day, etc was in that design too. Sorry if I'm reinventing the wheel here. I'm not sure exactly what stages of "that will never work" you've gone through already. -Bex IP: Logged |

bex, i like the cut of your jib. your idea is splendid, too . i think that the currently unused top left corner real estate could house a 90 degree arc on which sit icons expandable to the link name with a mouseover or somesuch.IP: Logged |

Jimbo: good point... any linkage that's needed could be thrown on the main page or added in with DHTML menus or something... Assuming we have someone around here who can code that up (I can't), that will work well.cydster, bexypoo, I'll see if I can do a new Rotator that wouldn't take so much room... I got a couple ideas, but I'm not sure how much they'll work. Guess I'll find out. IP: Logged |

Wow, I really like that. They managed to make all that fancy-ass flash stuff look not gay. I'm impressed, and I like the concept. IP: Logged |

Hmmm. Usable, but still not obviously enough a navigation tool. I'm not a real big fan of hiding really important parts of a design in something that "looks cool" but a lot of people are likely not to realize actually serves a purpose.IP: Logged |

Jimbo,Since it's moving and has some icons on it, I tend to mouseover. The fact that it instantly pops up the name of the link upon mouseover made it obviously a nav tool to me. But then again, I have a tendency to mouseover a lot of stuff when I'm surfing. If that had words or a more obviously related icon for each link, it would make it easier to find too. That sort of layout could still work. Either 90 degrees or 180 to save space compared to a full circle. -Bex IP: Logged |

jimbo, have you ever seen a page of pr0n, errr.. i mean technical schematic thumbnails with the words "click on the images for a larger version"? there are some people soooo incredibly studid (read: arkansas) that explicit instructions on how thumbnails work is needed. i think it's fair to say that penis readers share a certain minimum level of intelligence. a moving rotating thingy in one corner of the page that doesnt scroll off the top along with the content sort of stands out. investigation is natural, and then people know it's a nav tool. maybe we should conduct a study. set up a few test websites with various methods of navigating through the content. then send people the url only with instructions to look at different parts of the site and tell you what the experience was like. i'm curious to see how many people would really think about clicking on that rotating orb on aperfectcircle.com if someone hadnt said "check out the circle" IP: Logged |

:: nods :: I heard it too.Zippy, in principle I agree with you - but you're presuming a pre-existing level of interest in the site, for one thing. I dunno, maybe I'm just being anal, but I think often enough without that pre-existing level of interest people tend to just disappear instead of bothering... whereas if the navigability is easier, they may stick around, dig deeper, and get interested. Besides, you want to make sure even the biggest retards around can find the door games - retards get ass whoopings. IP: Logged |

you're right jimbo. how's that for a flamewar, eh? canadians cant start flamewars. it's against the laws of nature. we're too nice.there's something to be said for simple, easy, and efficient. a circle thing is kinda gadgety, but it's also just... cool. i wanna be cool dammit! but simple elegance is nice too. i think it's kind of like comparing a unix shell to the windows UI (not in terms of user friendliness, mind you, but rather in terms of simple elegance versus gadgets). So... you cant just replace the cool little characters that serve as buttons with words? You know.. like News, Articles, Cams... I dont know. perhaps you could also generate a pull down menu from each word. Then you would still have the little cool thing in the corner AND full site navigation. The Message board must be main page though -Chris IP: Logged |
