Okay, I'm less than enlightened here. Does that sentence mean what it looks like it means? 'Cause it looks like you're saying you, and all of us, are "dorian gays" - whatever a "dorian gay" is. And considering one of the links in those words was to someplace called "gaystation", I'm pretty sure I get enough of the idea to know VERY well I'm not one. I have a sneaking suspicion this wasn't quite what you meant to say, but fuck if I could manage to parse that sentence any other way. Clue me in here, willya? IP: Logged |

it is a play on words of the title of a novel by oscar wilde: the picture of dorian gray.i was saying that people's unwillingness to internalize the ugliness, to love the beauty as well as the ugliness of humanity while earnestly trying to better humanity is, in short, gay. and that we all collectively paint the ugly picture of humanity we see before us. thus, we are all dorian gays. and the gaystation link had 2 purposes. 1) it solidified the word play. 2) it is funny as hell. the review of the movie right above the picture of dorian gray in that link is hilarious. pickle: tales of mere existence. a boy eats a pickle to see if he's gay. some of the other reviews are funny, too. anyway, sorry you had a tough time understanding my post, jimbo, but it wasn't the fault of my grammar. but, feel free to let me know when my english usage is too cryptic, so i can clarify. i realize that sometimes my wording can be obscure and difficult to understand. however, this is usually because i am referencing something without fully explaining the reference for someone who isn't familiar with it. it is not, as your blunted slight would indicate i believe, that you are less "enlightened" than me or than anyone else.so, without further ado, for those too lazy to click on the link i posted, the picture of dorian gray is about a good looking man who prays that he will never look any more weathered or aged than a portrait painted of him in his prime. he gets his wish as his portrait shows the aging and weathering he would have endured from his actions. he takes this as a free license to say fuck all. essentially, his concern with his outward image contrasts his lack of concern for his inward growth. i beleive that media has increased the development of this particular characteristic of humanity. The Many Faces of Cyd: I have no idea what sort of odd internal dialogue led you to progress from the first face to the last over a three hour period: all I know is it had nothing to do with me, since I had no more contact with you elsewhere than I did here. Regarding your belabored protests, I was actually quite familiar with the premise of The Picture Of Dorian Gray. This familiarity, however, was no adequate preparation for the Sisyphean labors inherent in parsing your tortured syntax. In short, my advice to you is this: eschew obfuscation. </highbrow> IP: Logged |

I want to say that I had a very difficult time understanding this as well. quote: Originally posted by Cyd I realize that sometimes my wording can be obscure and difficult to understand. Yes. quote: Originally ranted by cyd: so, without further ado, for those too lazy to click on the link i posted,
Ok. Links are an afterthought. People have to still be interested enough after they read a post to want to go back and click on a link. If you have to click a link in order to "get" a post, then the reader is not at fault, the poster is. Unfortunately even after clicking the links I was unable to find anything that connected the title in my mind with the...er... pun. I also think that there are quite a few people who "love" the ugly side of humanity....or should I say what "I" consider the "ugly" side of humanity. Unfortunately the idea's of "ugly" and "pretty" are different for every person. What I see as "ugly" can be loved by another person. For proof of this look at zippy's pr0n collection... what some people find as "disgusting, bile-inducing tripe" others see as "hott sexxy masturbation material" I think that "ugly" and "pretty" follows these rules as well. -Chris IP: Logged |

two things to say here.first, the topic of this thread should really be Cyd.grammar < Yoda.grammar, not grammar.Cyd < grammar.Yoda. I'm a CS student, so i know. yep, respect my authoratay! second, clme said that links are an afterthought. i sincerally hope most people dont think that way when they read my posts (as rare as they are). when i write a post and include links, it's a thought out presentation that's supposed to take the reader on some sort of a journey through information on and off the penismightier website. it's a liner journey with a begining, middle, and end. when i write a post, i fully expect a reader to click on the links and examine the content there as they read the post. if the posts are left until last, and if some people dont even click the links until they decide if the text of the post was interesting enough or not, then i'm afraid that they're seriously missing out on quite a lot. why should a post on penismightier or any other e/n type website be different from a book or a movie? clearly, it's hard to express any sort of direction in a web post, whereas a movie or a book can take you wherever they want, whenever they want and you're forced to follow along. i think it's up to the reader to realize that they're not reading some text that has some interesting links on it, but are being given a story that is meant to entertain them for some period of time, and the intentions of the author should be respected for best results. jimbo: your unabashed attack is obviously the result of your closet homophobia. you couldn't get past the thought that i might have called you a fag, and so your brain got short-circuited.in reference to your first attack, there was no internal dialogue, i was really trying to clarify for you the full extent of what it was i was trying to say, from many of the levels from which i was saying it, as i didn't know what specifically you did not understand, since you stated what i meant just fine, outside of an understanding of the missing "r" in gray. so, first i gave you an overview of my hypothesis. second, i pointed out that i was not calling you a homosexual, then went on to say what i meant by "dorian gay." and lastly, i addressed my overall grammar and tried to dispel your insinuation about my pretention. so where are the "faces" about which you speak? additionally, to address your second attack, if you were familiar with who dorian gray was, and your original take on the "parsing of my tortured syntax" was, in spite of the fear of your own homosexuality it instilled, correct: ======================================================== Okay, I'm less than enlightened here. Does that sentence mean what it looks like it means? 'Cause it looks like you're saying you, and all of us, are "dorian gays" - whatever a "dorian gay" is. ======================================================== then what legend of sysiphus did you read where his first intuited action immediately completed his task, though he did not understand it? and to address your last statement, i'm not intentionally obtuse. i just think in broad strokes, trivializing the details. i'm sorry this angers you so much and causes you to feel you need to attack me. Zippy:When I said that links were an after thought I am afraid I meant it. I dont beleive that most people will click on a link unless they're fairly sure it will be interesting. How do you tell this? By reading the post. Of course... If a link is posted by zippy it WILL be interesting. -Chris IP: Logged |

vissi: that is your right.ayunami rei: thank you for your well thought out, constructive, grammatically correct criticism. clem: i can understand your difficulty in understanding that sentence. there are a lot of things being said there, and quite minimally at that. i do, however, often include links that flesh out my post, and are interesting both within and without the context of my post. nuentor: again, that is your right. zippy: i think you meant "if the links are left until last," instead of "if the posts." but i agree with you. the dynamic style of html in which you can click a link while you read the main text (the whole reason for the "target=blank" part of the html) is one of the intriguing aspects of this particular medium of writing for me. but no one has to do it that way. people can print my posts to wipe their ass with them as far as i care. Okay Cyd, let's take this one slow:1. Yes, you have it so right. I fear your mighty p3n15 will violate my tender anus, therefore I attack you. Uh-huh. How "insightful" of you. (Was that an epiphany?) 2. The internal dialogue was whatever prompted you to make three separate posts over the course of three hours, with no input from anyone else, which changed drastically in tone as time went by. 3. Look real fucking hard at this very page and see where you can find the very three faces that I posted. Hint: they're in the same order I posted them. Another hint: they're immediately to the right of the letters "cyd" and immediately to the left of the word "posted." Clued in yet? 4. You don't "think in broad strokes", you trip over a ladder and spill 5 gallons of semi-gloss latex on the carpet, man. It's messy, really. 5. The "Sisyphean labor" is continuing to attempt to communicate with your befuddled ass. Jesus man, snap out of the fog and pay attention - you couldn't even figure out where the faces remark came from and you posted them!? IP: Logged |

jimb0: ok, if you need to take it slow... (i heard you like it that way)1) ok, yer right, yer *not* a homophobe. 2) the posts did not change drastically in tone. or if they did, you've failed to point out how. 3) and i thought maybe you meant something deeper than that i used three different message icons. oooh, did that throw you off? 4) and i do think in broad strokes. it's a gemini trait. i sometimes miss the trees for the forest. but i see that you just wanted to twist that into an insult. you had nothing of value to say. or no, maybe you wanted to inform me about how my brain works? 5) and i like how you skirted addressing the flaw i exposed in your analogy. if you must continue this attack, let's do it in email, huh? Folks who feel as if they're conveying deep thoughts and believe that they have a deeper understanding of just aboot everything. Oh, and regarding this: quote: Originally posted by Cyd: people can print my posts to wipe their ass with them as far as i care.
You have to care at least a little. Otherwise you wouldn't be posting the things to begin with. You sure as hell wouldn't be getting defensive if you didn't care. The trick is to learn how to deal with criticism and flames. You dont start a flamewar and then say "lets continue this where I wont be so embarrased anymore". The cats out of the bag. You hang in to the end, give up, or ignore it. I tend to hang on to the bitter end. I also frequently lose. -Chris IP: Logged |

zippy - links may be essential to a post but they shouldn't have to be opened inline with the post for it to make sense.at most simply opening the link and seeing the contents therein should give enough understanding to appreciate the post. picture salt on french fries. without salt, fries are bland. but you can't have the salt all by itself. the same applies to links. they can increase the flavor of your writing, but at the point where they take over the meal you have to order a coke to wash it all down. or something. oh and jimbo's syntax makes a little more sense when you look at it as an enumeration rather than as state of an object. in languages that lack native enumerations (like java) you can get much the same effect by using a static instance of an object which defines constants for each member of the set. if the set is ordered it is perfectly valid to say grammar.x < grammar.y. basically cyd and yoda are enumerated levels of grammar in his version rather than state information.
