You tell me.. My friend told me about this (it's his site) and then he told others, and others told me. Now I tell you. Download this. Once I figure out how to actually save it onto my HD I will add it into my Random folder under "The Best".

Tell me what you think of this. Currently, the best thing on my Random scale (scored by the "Who the fuck cares" and "What's the point" factors) is my map of the genetic structure of Staphylococcus Aureus. Do you think this AWESOME peice of media should be above the genetic structure map?

unfortunately there's no (easy) way to get content out of real format and even if you did it would have all the artifacts in and look like hell after recompression. but there's no reason a new generation of multimedia should have to suffer.

Do not upgrade to version seven if you can avoid it at all. My god what a bloated pile of resource sucking, memory leaking, fetid, rotting, spying program.

At least with Real Player you can turn off the "tell them all your personal information without asking" option or the even more annoying "forced upgrade" option.

If I were you I would avoid the newest "media player 7 only" apps that are coming out even more than the .ram files. compared to that evil Realplayer is harmless.

After I spend the next hour killing any trace of media player 7, I'm reinstalling an earlier version and sticking with that. Fucking Quicktime was better than this peice of crap.

I only use Realplayer because most things that I can actually handle on a 56k modem happen to be in the .ram format. Since Media Player or Winamp was able to handle anything else, I turned off Realplayers auto-start, taskbar option, and "auto-update" options and let it be.

Yes, you can make lower quality files in other formats, but damn they're hard to find.

When I took my hardline stance on RealPlayer was the time I performed a little experiment: I opened a free email account. Let it ride for a week - no spam. Then I installed Real, fed it the spam-free new email address during installation, and VERY carefully unchecked all the "YES! Please spam me!" boxes they check by default. Double, even triple-checked my work before finally submitting.

The very next day, I had two spams in my inbox for the first time on that account. Another spam the day after that. Three more the next day.

THAT was the final fucking straw. Real = FUCKING WELL EVIL. The format sucks, they spam you EVEN AFTER you carefully uncheck the boxes that say it's okay for them to, they stick that fucking auto-start shit all over the place - BAH.

Also, I rememebr seeing something in the news in the last few weeks about Real partnering with someone for a big web broadcast something or other. I can't remember who it was now, but I was chuckling about it. Anyone recall what that was?

As for Windows Media Player 7, yeah, I agree, huge festering pile of mooseshit. What features were added since 6.4?
1) It no longer resizes the movie to fit the window by default (yeah, I'd like to watch a 1"x1" movie in a huge black empty space, please)

2. The online codec-searcher has been outfitted with fascinating new error messages (but not fixed)
3. New functionality to create playlists a la winamp.

Well, okay, I admit, the last feature seems like it might be useful. I say "seems like it might be" because that option has caused WMP to crash on every box I've ever tried it on. Yay Microsoft!

Of course, I know this is all pointless whining. With the exception of Divx (which was made, or stolen, by hackers), no one is actually trying to improve media formats anymore. An company that's actually trying to make a buck in that industry is working on digital rights-management type stuff. And I don't think I need to point out that you can't simultaneously make a format that's better for media watchers AND better for media producers.

I am a modem user who frequently misplaces my eyeglasses. I used to run a 17" monitor at 800x600 so I could sit 4 feet away without my glasses on and still be able to see things if I squinted. Now I run at 1024x768 and sit a foot away while squinting.

As for spam... I NEVER put a real email address on a "free" program. As for the programs that "require" an email address for "registration" of the free product... I have a few email accounts that I rarely check that hold those. I did find a few places that will not allow Yahoo! or Hotmail accounts to be used for registration though. "Fraud" protection my ass. Half the time all the "customer service" email addresses are from Yahoo! or Hotmail too. Hmm... Time to read the email TOS section about business email accounts (not allowed).
