Hiya! Related to THIS post:-What type of music to you normally listen to? -What is your favorite genre of music? Please limit your responses to your favorite two or three. I think the viability of a Pen music section could be determined on the broadness (or lack thereof) of the readers musical tastes. Of course.. we could always just have sections for each music style... but is there interest in a review section at all? -Chris IP: Logged |

We do not have time for me to go into all of the types of music I listen to. Here's the short list:80's punk 80's pop classic rock *good* country folk ska hip hop alternative hard rock classical parody My favorite genre by far is 80's punk. Having a music review section might take up a bit too much space, I don't think it would be really worth it, and some really good music would inevitably be left out. But that's just my opinion. Feel free to tell me to fuck off.

Hmm...As much as you want a "fuck off" I am sorry to say that I agree with you about the time/space issue. HOWEVER, What does everyone else think? And also throw in what type of music is your favorite -Chris IP: Logged |

Fuck off!Oh wait, I agree too. And as far as I'm concerned, "good country" is limited to the works of one man, and one man only. JOHNNY CASH. ------------------ I live for a great halter-top. IP: Logged |

Johnny Cash is about as country as Elvis.Which is to say, you could sorta make a case for it, but it really doesn't fit if you look at the whole thing objectively... I mean come on, this is a guy that covered Soundgarden and made it work, right? IP: Logged |

Yes, well, ahem. So he covered Soundgarden? The man's been playing music longer than Chris Cornell has been around. And yes, it is country music. Mr. Cash played in jails for Christ sakes. Since when does covering a song make one fall into a different musical genre? ------------------ I live for a great halter-top. IP: Logged |

Hey!Why dont we just say that MP3.com is the new PenIs music section? Yeah! MP3.com wont mind... maybe we can even get them to change their name to "PenIs Music Review/Sample page" The interests thus far still seem awfully broad to me. I doubt that we can make a pen music page work without someone putting a LOT of effort into it. Any ideas? [This message has been edited by Clme (edited 05-07-2001).] IP: Logged |

I'd just like to add that the song "All I need" by Air is one of the best songs ever made. If, for some reason, you can't find it on Napster, post it here and I'll mail it to you. It's THAT good. Filesize is 3.7Mb. IP: Logged |

YOu all know that I hate to agree with Jimbo, but he's right, Johnny Cash is not country. Ring of Fire is one of the alltime best songs written, but it's not country. Western, maybe, but not country. Good country, would be along the lines of Travis Tritt's more comedic songs, and a few Garth Brooks songs before the whole Chris Gaines hallucination. There are a couple more, but I don't bother to find out the names of country singers because if I like one song by them I'm almost always positive that thats' the only good song they sing. I'm not even sure why I like country at all, my dad was a DJ/Chief engineer for a country radio station for most of my childhood and I was subjected to it contantly. And of course all the cowboys wanted to be my friend because of who my dad was. Yuck. IP: Logged |

Look, bitch, I don't know what crack you're smoking but it is seriously fucking up your world-view. Garth Brooks is trash. Travis Tritt is trash. They are, at best, pop-country.What I don't understand is your logic --- did country music only recently appear? Because that's what you're saying --- the two you named are recent, yet the classic country figure I name is not even country, by your standards. What, since Johnny Cash was making music in the 60's, it must be "western" (whatever the fuck that is) because apparently to you "country" didn't roll it's 18-wheeled rig around until the 80's? What is considered "country" on radio stations today is not country. It's backwash, bile, unsophisticated, fluffy and spurious. No soul. No meaning. Get a clue. Go listen to some Cash. Go listen to some Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams. Get a soul. ***NOTE*** I rarely listen to country myself. I'm in such a huff because to outright say that Country is defined by Garth Brooks and Travis Tritt is one of the grossest misstatements I've ever come across. Cash is country. California is Western. Got it? ------------------ I live for a great halter-top. IP: Logged |

hank williams is country. johnny cash is one of those enigmatic type of people who can fall into different categories depending on the certain song and on the interpretation of the listener. the only person i like that is "country" is also "pop" and thats patsy cline the lady is amazing and dont argue about either cuz im jsut sayin that cuz i have a recordin of her live and the anouncer says her song is #1 on country and pop charts [edit: p.s. this will prolly be one of my last posts since i am not able to contribute at all and i feel like an extreme outsider even though i try to be included into most discussions, and no one seems to respond to anything i ever say so its all in a vain effort to fit in...]

My dad didn't work at a pop country station, they played Charlie Daniels, and Hank Williams and Box Car Willie, now that's country. Johnny Cash is still not country. Even my dad admits that. I'm not sure if Patsy Cline is really country either, she was way closer to pop (just because they play it on a country station doesn't make it so), but I love her too. I have a funny story about Patsy Cline songs, but that'll have to wait for another time. I like about 2 Garth Brooks songs, and I used to own one Travis Tritt album, because it was funny. There was a song called Bible Belt that cracked me up. Stations used to be called 'country and western' if they played certain songs that were not defined as country, then again, there's southern rock, a whole other category in itself.... this is too confusing. I think I need to smoke a bowl, then it will all become clear. Anyway, Johnny Cash rocks, Patsy Cline was far too cool, and I still love the Social D version of Ring of Fire. IP: Logged |

NIN my ass! Go get some Gary Numan and hear where Trent gets all of his ideas. Country has some great shit to offer, and NONE of it comes from Brooks, Tritt, Dixie Sluts, et al. If you want to listen to some awesome "New" Country then get something with Jeff Tweedy in it. Wilco would be a good place to start, or any of his solo stuff, also Uncle Tupelo is pretty damn good. And p.s to NUENTOTER - don't bail, you've been listenig to Patsy too much, she is all about sadness and neglect. Go get some Tweedy, he will make you feel better. Try: "California Stars" "Dreamer in My Dreams" "Passenger Side" "Hesitating Beauty" "Beautifull and Stoned" All of these songs could probably be found under "Wilco" or "Jeff Tweedy" on your filesnaking program of choice, or AIM me at - you guessed it - "zaksquatch" and I will ftp them to you IP: Logged |
