WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court handed medical marijuana users a major defeat today, ruling that a federal law classifying the drug as illegal has no exception for ill patients.

Patients could still use marijuana for medical reasons in states that allow it, legal experts said. But it would be more difficult to obtain the drug because the Supreme Court said distribution violates federal law, they said.

The 8-0 decision was a major disappointment to many sufferers of AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis and other illnesses. They have said the drug helped enormously in combatting the devastating effects of their diseases.

Yet another attempt to control every aspect of our lives by the government. Why am I not surprised. I'm sure you all know my opinion on the legalization of drugs, so since I've just used some 'medicinal herbs,' I'm going to go eat some swiss rolls. A lot of them.

well, i'm sure that it will take at least 8 years to undo all the atrocities that bushwhacker will bestow upon his minions.
as far as the medical marijuana ruling, they rejected a particular argument, not all arguments. so, there's still a chance it could be brought before the court again. personally, i think clarence thomas' statement was hypocritical, but he *is* suppost to uphole the letter of the law...

Well, the obligations of a judge are pretty clear. I saw a thing on CNN a little while ago about some judge in one of the carolinas who, every so often, makes defendants in his court choose between sudden marriage and moving out to comply with an ancient law prohibiting non-married couples living together.

Sounds neanderthal, but when interviewed, he said, "I think its a terrible law, and I hope they get rid of it. But until they do, I have to enforce it."

So blame congress.

As long as people who are making money off the legality of substances like marijuana (DEA for one) are in power its unlikely that any real movement towards legalizing any substance classified as a drug can be made.

They had to rule against it because they're corporate puppets.

Du Pont doesn't want someone taking away the market for their paper processing chemicals. Hemp paper is more durable, and cheaper than normal paper.

I think they ruled against it because its the "letter" of the existing law. The only way the law can be changed is by Congress. Its really a pretty fucked deal when someone has been driving drunk and kills someone and only does a few months or a couple years in prison, while someone caught growing a few plants for their own consumption and gets caught does some "mandatory" 10 years or whatever the hell it is. And then one can go on and on about the "war on drugs" and the personal freedom that we lose with what seems like every other ruling of the Supreme Court. Well fuck better not get started ...

Yep- read the news story: it was a very narrow ruling; not even on medical marijuana, but on the ruling of a different judge regarding medical marijuana. It's not really a major development.

I may take the oh-so-very-occasional drag of a righteous smokey treat, but it IS the law. I mean, there are some really stupid laws out there and they mayhaps should be rid of a few, but as long as they exist, we can't really be surprised when shit like this happens. We live in a much freer (sp?) society than anywhere else in the world, so I wouldn't go as far as to say that we have no personal freedom... Settle... Settle... It's not a big deal, and if you smoke now while it's illegal, then what was the original comlaint? Oh, yeah I forgot - we can take up for the sick because we want the recreational bud... Ahhhhh.. Bud...
