Every job has its benefits and hidden dangers. I've come across some firsthand in my various duties at the grocery store. For example: My grocery store's oil change center. Benefit: When I bring in my own car, I rarely have to pay to have the fluids checked and topped off.
Hidden Danger: A surprising number of people cannot follow directions. Like when you guide them over the pit in the floor and tell them to "STOP"(complete with hand gestures)... and they just keep staring at you and almost run you over. I'm also waiting for the day that I get blown up by the morons who insist on smoking while filling their gas tank at the gas station next door... Yes they really do it.
Me: Sir, you have to put out that cigarrette while pumping gas. Jackass: HuH? What? Why? Me: Sir, put the cigarrette out. Now. Jackass: Who's your manager? *begins to toss cigarrette on the ground* Me: NO! For the love of god this is a gas station.
So, the question before you is: Does your job have hidden dangers that most people wouldnt' think of? [This message has been edited by Clme (edited 06-07-2001).] IP: Logged |

Here's another one:Liquor Store Benefit: Very little supervision, and you get to throw people out of the store. Hidden Danger: Very little supervision, so you have to throw people out of the store. Some of these people get violent if deprived of their alchohol. [This message has been edited by Clme (edited 06-07-2001).] IP: Logged |

Being assistant manager of a supermarket at age 18Benefit: Not having to work very hard. Order some stuff, count some money, read magazines, tell other people what to do. Great fun. Hidden Danger #1: The supermarket was broken into one night, and about $15.000 was stolen. The backdoor was forced open, BUT the alarm had been turned off with the proper code. Also, the burglars knew where to find the key to the safe (yeah, prety dumb to leave it there). I was one of three people who knew the alarmcode and hidingplace of the key to the safe, and had a key to the store. Not a lot of fun at all. Hidden Danger #2: It's expected of an assistant-manager to calm his coworkers after a robbery involving a junkie waving a knife around... -even when his legs are shaking so bad he can barely stand and is two seconds away from shitting his pants. Ya'd think McDonald's would be a safe place to work.... I have many a story to post. One time, one summer, a man chased another man through the entire restaurant with a baseball bat. Pretty scary. The store manager was hard at work doing her end-of-the-month paperwork when they ran by. What was her response? She never looked up to see who was running... "Hey, no running in the store!" ANother time, a man dropped a fry in his moving car, as he bent to pick it up, he stepped on the gas pedal and ran right into the center of our lobby. Luckily no one was hurt. Robberies had been going on around town at every McD's except ours, so far. We were all pretty tense. Someone noticed a van "casing out the joint' so a manager called the police. Turned out she called the police on the police. Hey, at least we were observant. Let's see, the McD's I worked at here in Ft Lauderdale was right next to a homeless camp. Most of you might know that most people are mentally handicapped. Several have brought in knives, sticks, etc. Jesus knocked out one of the other managers. Great fun. I also worked a vitamin manufacturing plant. One night, just 1/2 hour before we were scheduled to leave, there was shooting outside the business. (random shooting, even) No one heard a thing because it's so loud inside, but I read about it the next day in the paper. Gosh.... give me time to think, I know I have more. ------------------ Is she not right? Is she insane? IP: Logged |

Good job: opening an art gallery for 4 hours from 10-2 on a saturday morning, with 2 hours of cleaning work, so you can spend 1/2 the time slacking, and getting rid of hangovers.Hidden danger: Leaving the work till too late, your boss coming in and telling you to do stuff yopu don't have time to do. ------------------

Realize that if you are a bad boy whilst in prison, there are isolation housing units. These are one inmate to a cell, no contact with other inmates. Most do not get TV, magazines, books, etc. They have to stare at the walls to pass the days. It's enough to drive an inmate crazy... and it does. ------------------ Is she not right? Is she insane? The meat department deli counter.Benefit: If its not busy I find plenty of time to indulge in a few slices of very good ($6.00/lb) sandwich meat. Hidden Danger: I sometimes work with people who shouldn't handle knives. I've come very close to losing body parts due to someone "slipping" or trying to throw knifes and throwing them the wrong way. They just laugh. Then they cut themselves (again). These are the people handling your steaks and sandwich meat by the way I actually have refused to work in the meat department if certain people are allowed to have knives while I'm in the same room.

Wait wait wait.... Anal rape doesn't drive one crazy after awhile?
I dont mean to brag... but I happen to know it drives the goats crazy with desire. But yeah... NORMALLY I thought that solitary was meant to drive them a little crazy. But frightened kitten crazy rather than homicidal crazy, which they probably were before they were thrown into solitary. Thats actually one of the reasons I dont like the death penalty (other than the whole "oops, it wasn't you that killed that man and we just electrocuted you" thing). I'd rather the thought of a guy sitting alone in a room, bored out of his head than getting a needle jab and disappearing. Yes, thats right. I prefer a life sentence because its less humane, rather than more. I am a vicious bastard.

Actually I spend a good deal of time at my grocery stores "help desk", handling returns and telling people where shit is. Also the meat dept., video, photo, gas station, dairy, stocking, checking, carts, etc, etc, etc.The oil change center is just outside the store, and I get called upon to help or work out there periodically. We have no "club cards" "MVP cards" etc. "Everybody in the whole fucking world is a member". (not official motto) But yes, many of the people who work the meat department regularly have some problems... but not as bad as our baggers -Chris

job title: Telesalespros- good pay 8.15/hour while in high school and if manager wasnt around could do homework and take calls and not talk to the people. cons- you are THE MOST hated person in the world, every 2-3 calls someone lets out on you screaming and swearing and you Have to listen to it, or else you can get in trouble. (lose your job for hangin up on a customer) me: "oh im sorry sir, were you eating supper?" customer: "no i wasnt" me: "oh ok sir ill just call back at that time sir" customer: "fuck you budy, i gonna fuckin kill you if you call me during supper you sunuvabitch, fuck you fuck you ect.." me: "thank you sir and have a terrific day" i then proceed to call security and tell them that my life was threatened by a customer and i give them the guys name and address and #, they sometimes get arrested depending on if they get pissed at the cops who stop by.

No, I'm talking about the help desk that's at the company's data center - the one that 250 retarded meat managers from 250 stores in the chain call because they're retarded and they broke their scales or something.Of course, a good half of the problems occur because the chain is too cheap to buy decent equipment and hire good programmers... But that doesn't excuse the meat department. Not that other departments don't suck too - the pharmacies hire their own special brand of retards - but the meat department... well, let's just call them meatheads and move on. IP: Logged |

Last job: Research technicianBiggest Danger: Catching plague or West Nile Virus as a result of the research projects. At least I could take antibiotics for plague. ____________ Current job: Veterinary Technician Biggest Danger: Catching Salmonella or Crytosporidium from my patients. While I tend not to get bitten (although some have tried), I have been kicked, body slammed into walls, shit on, pissed on, bled on and dribbled with pus. Fortunately, I love my job. -Bex IP: Logged |
