Microsoft ARE monitoring?Hmmm. Honestly I think that Win XP will put microsoft out of business if they go through with the whole "Pay by the year" plan. Dammit... If I've already paid $80.00 for a program I sure as HELL am not doing it again next year. Hmm... 98 and 2000 may stick around for quite awhile -Chris IP: Logged |

Yeh, that's my hope.. that Microsoft will shoot itself in the foot with all its big brother shit. Yes, piracy is rampant, but they're not exactly struggling, so they look like a big huge fat dude suing an orphan for the last slice of pie.The problem is- people get fed up, and they turn to.... what? fen IP: Logged |

Well... I'd say linux but I'm not exactly expecting a rash of people to magically throw out their windows programs and habits and install a new operating system.I have noticed a slew of people trying it out as of late though. Shit, even my parents are switching some of their machines over. -Chris IP: Logged |

It's fake. Like they would use the Messenger Service for this. Yeah right. Rename one PC to "Microsoft" and start having fun.On the other hand, this just made me retch. IP: Logged |

Doesn't XP also only allow 10 installs per CD as well? I mean, I've had to install an entire OS more than 10 times a WEEK on the various b0XX3z in our house.IP: Logged |

:: laughs, points ::Um. How's it only gonna allow 10 installs per CD? Unless it REQUIRES internet access as a part of installation... then it would be possible to only allow 10 installs per CD-key - at least, without a crack - but it still wouldn't have anything to do with individual CDs, 'cause it'd be HIDEOUSLY goddamn expensive to custom burn every single CD. That's what my dad told me. I think he said something about internet access being required to install it. I'd have to ask him again to be sure. But seeing that Jimbo is the god of all knowledge, and my dad is a supposedly "Libertarian" Dr. Laura (I'm quite serious...it's scary. I was like 'Dr. Laura? God, she's an idiot.' Then he was like: 'You've only been TOLD she's an idiot...she's a very moral person.') fan, I think I'm gonna take Jimbo's word for it. IP: Logged |

to activate anything XP (windows or office) you need to have internet access and a cd key. when you install, it sticks the cd key in a database with whatever other info it feels like ganking from you. so you *can* limit a cd key to a certain number of installs, but i dont see it being too hard to crack that. if you dont happen to have an internet connection, you have to call a microsoft phone number and they'll activate it for you manuallybend over, grab your ankles. good boy. well i am in the process of building my first linux box to combat Microsoft's shameless gouging, this is a equally shameless plug for everyone to send me free of charge all their old unused puter parts they have laying in the closet. oh yea and a copy of mandrake 8.0 would be nice.....J/K!! i am truly though building a linux box and hopefully by the time my copy of win98se becomes unusable, i will have become very proficient with linux. i refuse to pay someone 80-100 dollars a year to use their crappy software. On the issue of Mandrake: Mandrake is an extremely fine distro of linux. Infact the installer on Mandrake is far more user friendly than the win98 installer.I run mandrake on my 1000mhz box, my bitchbox, my bedroom box, the new pen firewall, and Sara's computer even has mandrake dual booted on it. It comes with gAim and a couple icq distros for those of you who need to chat. Various mail clients (6 or so) and about 6 browsers (mozilla, konquerer, netscape, lynx, etc). Also StarOffice.. I even have games, alpha centuri, q3, etc.. Mandrake is doing a fine job of make a desktop distro of linux. IP: Logged |
