DuMauriers Mightymon?

Shit... The average wake-and-bake will still be healthy when those things start to take their toll on you.

Of course, I suppose you can start your hair on fire either way, eh? Or walk in front of a bus, thats right.

Maybe that nic-fit will prevent you from walking into the street right when that bus comes barreling around the corner at 55 miles an hour because there's a bomb on board and they dont want to blow up the star of that movie they're shooting! Just think, if you hadn't stopped to light that cigarette you'd be dead now!

Ah, the marijuana FUD...

quote:
Furthermore, [marijuana causes] many adverse effects [in comparison to codeine] -- including cognitive impairment, psychosis, blurred vision and palpitations -- which limited its use.

  • cognitive impairment - well duh. But, um... we WERE comparing this to CODEINE, right? That stuff gets you FUCKED up.
  • psychosis - oh, whatever. the hallmark of a marijuana FUD campaign is the tired old "psychosis" claim. "Reefer madness, people! REEFER MADNESS!"
  • blurred vision - what?! squinty eyes, yes - actual visual impairment, no.
  • palpitations - mmm, it does have a minor effect on some people's heart rate. not as serious as it might sound though - nobody's EVER had a heart attack caused by using marijuana. (lethal dose is approximately 60,000 times the "recreational dose" - how much can you smoke?)

They also conveniently failed to mention little things like Codeine being ADDICTIVE AS HELL (marijuana is completely non-addictive), the very serious danger of poisoning deaths in people who drink alcohol while taking Codeine, etc, etc, ad infinitum, ad nauseam.

As to weed not being addictive, my screwed up kid brother would like to disagree.

Still, each person has their own poison.

My idiot jag is computer games. Sad but true. I can play the damn things nightly, for hours. Many hours.

Negative Effects of computer games?

1) Sleep Deprivation, including lowered immune system, reduced reaction times, impared reasoning.
2) Loss of ability to interpret environmental stimuli while on a gaming jag. (i.e. speech, the phone ringing, fire alarms, armed robbers)
3) Reduction of Visual Accuity. (Eyes get bloodshot and hard to focus)
4) Loss of interest in eating, sleeping, using restroom, fucking or otherwise interacting with flesh and blood people.
5) Computer Games are addictive, and can lead a user into poor spending habits. Users often get into a cycle of spending money on new pariphenalia, in order to play the more hardcore games. This, in turn, feeds the habit and promotes interest in more advanced and bleeding edge games, which eventually require further upgrades...
6) Computer games can involve and promote antisocial and sociopathic behavior.

So I'm not the person to be telling people to get the fuck off drugs. I just ingest my poison through my eyes and ears.

Anyone else want to share their addictions?

I think this brings up the topic of psychological vs. physical addictions.

Weed, as far as I know, doesn't have any physical addictions. People who become addicted to weed are addicted in the same way that others are addicted to video games, television, etc.

While codeine has very severe physical addictions. Its a fucking narcotic, people!

Anyway. I neither smoke nor toke, but I have a hell of an addiction to caffeine and my computer

I'd say my addiction to caffine is far worse than anything I've ever felt for pot. I find myself sometimes just wanting coffee or nodoz just for the pick up or just because. I also find a stronger addiction to the lifestyle it gives me. When tweaking on NoDoz, I get a lot of coding, homework, paying attention in class accomplished. And I know if I ever touched speed my life would be over. Codine itself can be addictive and as doctors I imagine that they would find that to be a number one concern to find an alternative.

Potato skins, potato cakes
Hash browns, and instant flakes
Baked or boiled or french fried
There's no kind you haven't tried

You planned a trip to Idaho
Just to watch potatoes grow
I understand how you must feel
I can't deny they've got appeal

Whoah
You like them whether they are plain or they're stuffed, oh yeah
Better face the facts, it seems you can't get enough
You know, you're gonna have to face it
You're addicted to spuds

Your greasy hands, your salty lips
Looks like you found the chips
Your belly aches, your teeth grind
Some tator tots would blow your mind

And you don't mind if they're not cooked
You need your fix, I guess you're hooked
And late at night you always dream
Of bacon bits and sour cream

Whoah, you like them even if they're lumpy or tough, oh yeah
Whee, It's pretty obvoius to me you can't get enough
You know you're gonna have to face it
You're addicted to spuds

Might as well face it, you're addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, you're addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, you're addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, you're addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, you're addicted to spuds

Ooh yeah

I'm givin' up, it'sjust no use
Another case of spud abuse
What can I say, what can I do
Potato bug has got me too, Wahoo

I used to hate them, now they're all that I eat, oh yeah
Whee, I've often seen then whipped, but they just can't be beat
Now I'm gonna have to face it
I'm addicted to spuds

Might as well face it, I'm addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I'm addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I'm addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I'm addicted to spuds

Might as well face it, I'm addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I'm addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I'm addicted to spuds

I wouldn't mind discussing with you, Jimbo, the life I live as the madly-in-love wife of a man who is undoubtedly addicted to marijuana. I only take up arguement with your term "completely". If by that you mean completely physically then I concede. But I guarantee you that my husband is psychologically addicted to marijuana which has made him incapable of coping with real life problems and we both pay the consequences every day.

i'm addicted to porn. i know, it's sad, but true. i love porn in all forms. i need to see porn almost every day. it's gotten to the point where a person can send me a link of some porn harder than the standard girl posing or guy+girl, and i've already seen it. even the amateur stuff.

luckily, i'm going through an intensive rehab session with my girlfriend. we're substituting internet porn with real life homemade porn, and it's way more fun. geeks need love too.

Being "psychologically addicted" is like being "slightly pregnant."

That's like being "addicted" to not washing the dishes. "Fuck, man, I know I should wash them, but... computer games... Dexter's Lab is on TV... oh fuck, I'll do 'em later, there's only a couple..." ... and next thing you know, you have two sinks completely full of dishes to do.

Making less-than-optimal decisions - even on a repeated basis - and "addiction" are two ENTIRELY separate things. What keeps your husband going back to the weed is in HIMSELF - not in the weed.

THAT's the difference between a "bad habit" and an "addiction."

When I first start something new, I get obsessed, but then I tire of it quickly enough and have a "handle" on it. Pot, the 'net, Terry Pratchett, whatever. I just ain't an addictive personality.

i think that there's a medium between being psychologically addicted to something and having a bad habit. it does take a certain kind of personality and a certain set of external circumstances to become "psychologically addicted", but one those factors are present, it might as well be an addiction. your husband turns to pot because he doesnt want to deal with other things, and that is in effect an addiction. but unlike an addiction, it's easy to stop smoking pot. he just needs to figure out why he doesnt want to deal with everything else, and then change that. ba-da-boom, ba-da-bing

I believe a substance could fairly be termed a "psychological addiction" when it isn't a physical addiction yet the person still doesn't feel like himself unless he's using it. Also, what is the status of a person with powerful cravings for something? Some substances do not put a person through physical withdrawal with delirium tremens and the like, but they still produce overwhelming cravings.

Years ago, I knew a person who craved marijuana so badly that he was willing to steal to get it. Before doing that, he sold off most of his possessions, including his record collection (this was back in vinyl days), and he loved music. How can his condition be accurately described?

"Unwilling to face reality, and using a mood-altering drug as a tool to avoid it."

You could call him "pathologically dependent" and be accurate. The key difference between addiction and dependence is whether you're "hooked" or simply "refuse to give it up."

... although to be perfectly honest with you, I think externalizing the problem of addiction to "it's the [nicotine, alcohol, heroin, whatever], it's not me" is also a mistake - even if you're physically addicted, you're still the captain of your own soul. The quicker you are to attempt to externalize responsibility, the more you're going to lose.

Bill's description of his friend is strangely similiar to my husband. Even if we only have $60 left for the next month, he justifies that he can use $40 for an eighth and we can survive on $20 for food and gas. I would love for Zippy to come over and run his "ba-da-boom, ba-da-bing" on my husband. I'm sure that would fix everything.

Although the body DOES become dependent on such substances as nicotene, I don't think the addicition should be an excuse for the continued use of the substances in question. Unless it's with like, heroin where you can DIE from withdrawal. But even with a habit as tough (or so it seems) as smoking, you only need to go 4-5 days cold turkey before the cravings subside. I mean, it's a lot better to be miserable for 5 days than it is to fuck up your lungs and pay higher insurance rates.

As far as marijuana goes, it produces such a wide array of different effects that it's still debated whether or not it's physically or psycologically addictive, although the latter is generally favored. With the research I've done for school projects concerning it, I've found piles of supporting evidence for both sides' cases (Although the latter has more and better). Quite obviously, if you're responsible enough, it can actually benefit you, and in any case, doesn't burn out your brain or anything. I mean, look at what a genius Carl Sagan was. HE was a pothead. It's not that pot makes you stupid...it's just that many people who choose to use it already ARE stupid.

Imagine THIS coming from someone who blames his Schizophrenia for all his problems.

i have to agree with jimbo again (this is getting to be a bad habit). it's your own fucking body. if you feel that you have a craving for it, avoid the substance. just. stay. away. there is no invisible hand forcing you to light up a joint. there is no reason for your brain to lose control of itself and do something you dont want it to do. realize that you *can* control your urges and desires, and you will.
