infinite jest by david foster wallace (best book ever).
a supposedly fun thing i'll never do again (ibid.)
pretty much everything terry pratchett's done
maus by art spiegleman -- i had read this for the first time like 8 or 9 years ago, and just recently felt like rereading it (because fucking scott mccloud kept using it as an example in his understanding/reinventing comics books) still amazing.
and to combine the sex & reading thread:
some of this stuff is pretty good.

I'm currently reading the Mote in God's Eye by Niven and Pournelle. I had forgotten how much I like this book. Another one dealing with contact with a new species and the problems that can arise is Orson Scott Card's Speaker for the Dead, which is a sequel to the utterly fabulous Ender's Game. i don't remember seeing twain or poe on anyone's list, two of the all time great american authors. am i the only one who likes those two?i haven't read any twain in a while so i can't recommend a particular story or book just now, but i just finished rereading a book of poe shorts and i'd have to point out "the purloined letter" and "a descent into the maelstrom" as two of my favorites. poe was also a damn good poet, if you like that sort of thing. haven't seen much greek drama either. i'll throw out euripedes as my favorite from that genre. "ion", in particular is a pretty good read. if you haven't liked greek drama before, you should give euripedes a try. his style is a lot different than the other famous dramatists. IP: Logged |

Thank god someone finally mentioned Larry Niven, I was starting to worry. Larry Niven is doubtless one of the finest sci-fi storytellers on Earth, and you can't go wrong with almost any of his books. If you haven't read Ringworld and Mote in God's Eye, you can't really even say you're a fan of science fiction, IMHO. Well, Ringworld at least.
As for the sex... jeez, you preverts, can any thread get 10 messages deep here without devolving into a blowjob forum? Save it for the next PenIs party.

Call me weird, but for sheer reading pleasure, my favorite Heinlein is still Friday. I know I know, he has others which are technically superior, but there's something to be said about a genetically engineered bisexual chick who knows how to kill with her bare hands. Starship Troopers was quite good and really not much like the movie.I'm now reading another Niven called A World Out of Time, about a guy who froze himself in hopes of waiting for a cure for cancer and is awakened to be a slave for society 200 years later. The funniest thing is they called themselves "corpsicles". He even explained it as a spin-off of popsicles. I'm not sure what I think of the concept of memory being coded in RNA that can be injected to help you learn faster tho. Also, interesting note here.. Says in the beginning of the book if you have a first edition of Ringworld, hang on to it because it's the only time you'll see the earth rotating backwards (Ch. 1). -Bex IP: Logged |
