WTF are people running to get 6hr run times on SETI?I have it running on a plethora of machines, and my fastest completion so far is like 10 hours, and that was on a 4 proc Xeon 550/1mb machine with a gig of RAM (backup DB). Another weird thing is that my 750mhz laptop takes like 30 friggin hours... IP: Logged |

Didn't you know? He converted his old atari 5200 to run linux, and it turns out its more powerful than Intels latest chip!!seriously though: I dont think SETI is configured to run on multiple processors, which is a shame. So the 550mgz machine was probably only running one processor at 550mgz.
There are a few things you have to do to get good times from SETI:
- 1) If you are running NT or 2000, run it as a service. Somewhere in the Tech forum there's detailed directions on how to do this.
- 2) If you run the screen saver version, make sure you have it set to blank screen. If you leave the display up, it actually increases your time by about %500 or more! I have no idea why... it just does.
- 3) Try to actually stay away from the computer periodically... if you (like me) have 3 people using your machine, it wont do a packet in less than 4 days
While this doesn't affect the time (much) it does affect how often you turn in a result.
Oh yeah... SETI takes longer to run now than it did 6 months ago They wont accept the old version anymore, but if you were once getting 5 hour times, you wont anymore. -Chris [This message has been edited by Clme (edited 07-22-2001).] IP: Logged |

Its all about the command line version, don't run the slow dinky screen saver version.BTW Atari5200 (josh) is running a Duron 600 overclocked to 1056mhz ( I think ). I'm still 6 hours at 1016mhz with my overclocked duron. IP: Logged |

To install Seti as a service (WinNT/Win2k only) use FireDaemon.IP: Logged |

Nothing wrong with the 100+ hours per unit that I've pulled down recently on my PIII 500.And Eod, that command line version -never- fucking worked. IP: Logged |

leaving the display up takes more time because it's doing more work. if, like you said, seti can't use parallel processors that means the seti process has to block every time the screen drawing process comes up. if you have the blank display up, it drastically reduces the amount of drawing to do and speeds up your time.and in my act of blasphemy for the day, bah on seti. never ran it. never will. Well... whats the worst that could happen because I'm running SETI? My processor may(under certain circumstances) have a several month reduced lifespan? Its already 3 years old, I dont have any cooling problems, and the motherboad has overheat protection. So.. the question remains... Whats wrong with running SETI? It doesnt' even take up processing time while your using the machine. Its TSR is ultra small. Unless you're saying its more trouble than its worth, or that you dont believe in its mission... in which case... a lot of people may agree with you -Chris IP: Logged |

i've just always thought it was pointless. in the time it would take radio waves to get here there's a good chance whatever planet these people are on isn't even there any more. even if it were, without some star trek-type warp drive or space folding tech, we'd never be able to talk with them. hell, any signal that made it this far would probably be so distorted we couldn't begin to decypher it anyways. if we can't talk or even just listen to me the couple of months worth of my processor's life isn't worth it. and as i said, it was my idol to smash for the day.IP: Logged |

Then I think you really ARE missing the point, deez. The ultimate point isn't to find, talk with, and trade recipes with aliens, it's simply to KNOW. -3

The real point is to show off your processing power and your processor tuning skills. You've just never run it because your to chicken to run with the big boys.. *rev* *rev* Sorry I was just watching american graffiti, I'm gonna go out and drag race now. IP: Logged |

that's not much of a point. given the size of the universe it's almost certain that there is life out there - somewhere. by analyzing radio waves you're not showing that there is life out there. you're just showing that there are radio emmisions that don't fit everything we know about all the cosmic crap floating around. it could be the echos of another civilization, it could be a new form of star, or it could be intergalactic line noise. anything found by seti doesn't let us know anything but the fact that we don't know as much as we think we do. and that's pretty much implied. not that there's any harm in it except the waste of electricity. i'd just rather waste my electricity on video games. Hmmm... I just had a thought. Why don't they develop a seti client that runs on Cisco's IOS? Now THAT would be interesting. I have no idea what kind of CPU's the average Cisco router/switch has, but in most companies there are a LOT of them, so that should count for something... IP: Logged |

Let's see, my companies'PIX FW has a pentium 233mhz, and our 7206VXR has a 266MHZ RISC processor... Not very quick. On the flipside, most versions of IOS a pretty lightweight... A lot of mass storage equipment (like NetApp) runs on the BSD kernel, so I'm sure it's possible... IP: Logged |

For people with multi processor setups check out home.setibuffer.com it will download a work unit for each processor so it won’t speed up the time for each unit at least you wont have your other processors setting idle. It will also buffer work units so if your stuck with a dial up connection you don’t have to leave it setup to auto connect. No more driving my roommates crazy when the modem goes to dial in the middle of a call.IP: Logged |

Best part of having a 56K is hearing the "Build up" part. It's near the end of the connection where it gets louder and louder, then just like.. booms.. hehe. I'm such a nerd.IP: Logged |
