Youngsters who play computer games regularly but not excessively also tend to have more friends and be better adjusted than those who make do with traditional pastimes such as reading and television. "People who play games regularly seem to develop a mental state that we have seen before only in serious athletes or professionals such as astronauts, whose life depends on concentration and co-ordination," said Jo Bryce, who led the research. "Their minds and bodies work together much better than those of most other people."

I also liked this comment in the article "A recent study by the Home Office indicated that those who regularly played computer games when young were more likely to go to university and get a better-than-average job. They also tended to be more intelligent."People my age (early 20's) are some of the first people that played video games on a regular basis as a child. Everyone of my friends, seem to enjoy playing video games. I am almost 100% positive that this same study wasn't conducted in the 70's when Pong was the only video game available on the home market. One last quote from the article "Not all research shows the benefits of information technology for teenagers. A separate study by Griffiths showed that many children using their computers to excess developed severe personality problems. One 16-year-old boy spent 70 hours a week at his computer and had no friends except those he met on the internet. He once abstained for three days and showed withdrawal symptoms." Sound familiar to anyone when they get a new pc?? ---------------------------- I'm sure the boy was thinking this: God, I could sure go for a double click right now. IP: Logged |

Well I'm going to France for two weeks this saturday. I'm worried about withdrawal as well. I'll just have to compensate with things like excessive drinking, playing cards, reading and floating in the river. Oh poor me. Oh there's a gourmet chef coming too, so I should add awesome food to that list. How will I survive?? IP: Logged |

Who can't deny the sudden rush, the feeling of 'fuck yeah!'-ness when they upgrade/get a new box? I've set my current sights on a geforce3. IP: Logged |

Wishlist? Ok here's mine:-Upgrade my Plextor 32x CD-ROM drive; its getting flaky. -Get a new cd-burner. I still have a 2-speed. -Replace my Geforce SDR. At the moment my p3-900 still suffices, so I won't upgrade that one for a while yet... IP: Logged |

This is a very true phenomenon. I give myself as a prime example. Kept away from society by the evil Nintendo corporation, I was forced to spend my idle brain loops on things such as better self coordination, i.e. playing with make believe ninja's in my back yard at the age of 12. Anyhow, I am convinced that this is why I did so well in those few weeks of Marine boot camp that I was actually able to experience. That is all.... IP: Logged |
