I received the letter from the IRS last week
Indicating we should receive $600.00 during the first week of August. I WANTED to spend the money on a aftermarket performance ECU for my Maxima. However, my wife had other plans and hired a couple of college students to paint the exterior of our house.
The $600.00 will go into the paint fund, what a waste. Is anyone doing anything FUN (frivolous) with their money?
CPU, memory, video card, disk upgrades?

If I were getting $600, I'd spend it exactly how Dubya would want me to spend it. On cocaine and prostitutes.

I plan to sit on it for a while in protest of this just being a cheap publicity stunt where Dubya uses up a large chunk of the imaginary surplus to try and goose a floundering economy into action.

marcel: I'd go for the preformance ecu. Its one of my favorite upgrades I did on my Golf. Not only does it have more torque in the lower rpms but now it just keeps pulling and pulling til red.

Then get your ass up on the ladder and paint the house yourself.

btw $600 would be a bit steep for a preformance ecu. I had mine custom burned for my engine, exhaust, cams and intake setup and it was only $150.

Where did you have this done? JW Technology quotes over $660.00 for a upgrades ECU. Yesterday I ordered the Place racing CAI ($220.00) and a 4 piece clear lamp kit from Courtesy Nissan.

What did you do for exhaust? I'm looking for a economical solution that is not much louder than stock. I have been looking at Y-pipes (cat-back?). Don't know of any cam upgrades for the Maxima.

It's necessary to keep the upgrades fairly economical so as not to cause domestic intranquility.

As for painting the house........3 stories on a laddder is a bit much for me. Besides, it's a nice feeling having a beer and watching someone ELSE do the work for a change.

You have to put in to get it back Pete (Tax Refund). Of course, if the Demacratic version of the bill was passed you COULD get it back without putting in.

As I sadly found out... if you didnt make any taxable income last year or... as in the case of many college students recieved all of what was taken back you dont get anything . According to my IRS letter there will be an opportunity to claim the credit on our 2001 taxes.

Yes, they passed the realistic conservative 'you can't regain what you didn't put in the middle' version, instead of the fantasy liberal 'magic wealth redistribution lottery' version.

Meaning I didn't get a refund either, since I was refunded all of my taxes.

On another note, fuck the IRS, and fuck morons in Washington who 'accidentally' write the wrong ssn on their return, thereby claiming me as a dependent and totally fucking up my 1999 refund. I am STILL trying to get this resolved.

Marcel: Aftermarket parts for VWs are typically cheaper because there are a lot of companies making aftermarket stuff for VW.

I installed the chip myself, I ended up with a TT ecu chip.. Even though I have to run 91+ octane, I've also increased my mpg along with a nice boost to torque and hp as well as smoothing out my idle for my cam.

I also went with a TT exhaust setup and replaced everything from the catback out. 2.25" piping all the way to the catback. Borla muffler. It has a nice growl at WOT but other than that just a tad louder than stock.

Of course, suspension work, wheels, z rated rubber, intake, stereo work, and some body mods.

Another nice and fairly cheap mod are short shift kits (assuming you have a manual and not an automagic)

I had to wait an extra week for delivery of the MAX because I required a manual. There's nothing finer than getting the R'ssss up and dropping it into 3rd for a nice surgical pass. (People who won't get out of the fast lane). How could anyone NOT row their own?

Upgraded to synthetic crank case oil yesterday, no noticeable difference.

As for the shifter, I have 3 under consideration, all adjustable (they seem expensive @ $200.00), this will be done with a gear oil change to redline synthetic.

Another big bang for the buck upgrade for the MAX was the strut tower brace. Which prevents any front end flex, great traction thru long sweepers.

i got a nice phat $1600 tax rebate this year. it's nice being able to claim things like tuition and alternating work terms with school terms. if *I* wasnt moving to portland (oregon), i'd buy a nice koolance case, a geforce3, and a new thunderbird.

or a car. or something.

Thats one thing I haven't done is upgrade my oil to synthetic. Thats one of my goals this weekend is to go with synthetic in the crank and tranny.

Judging by that price on the shift kit you must have a drive by wire setup.

Please correct me if I'm wrong...

I thought that the main benefit of converting to synthetic was that it would make your car last longer, not perform better. Granted, less friction, etc may have some pleasing side effects, but the gears still have to make contact with each other...

So, congratulations, your car will now have added benifits of another 50k miles or so

Well a lot of times people notice a drop in temp when converting to synthetic. Just like in overclocking. Lowering the temp doesn't make the computer go fast but it is key to actually modding of the car.

With my new ecu and camming the engine gets pretty hot, every little bit helps.

I typically see gas mileage increases when I switch a vehicle from sludge to synthetic. Mobil 1 = r0xx0r.

Don't worry. It wasnt't a tax "rebate"- it was an advance on next years taxes. If you didn't get one, you simply pay less taxes next year.

Speaking of gas mileage increases... This is sort of fucked up.

Theoretically higher octane gas should give you better mileage, right? Most people don't see any increases, and I never had previously, but here's the story.

Normally, on a full tank of 87 octane, driving like a lucking funatic, I get on average 220 miles on the trip odometer before I need to fill up again. ('93 Probe GT, 6 cylinder)

Recently I filled up with 93 octane, and the trip odomoter hit 265 miles before I filled up again. I got 93, and the next tank bagged me 282 miles.

Sweet!

And on another note, scroll up and look at my message complaining about the fuckhead morons at the IRS being about 14 months late with last year's refund. I still haven't gotten it.

To the anonymous buck futter in Washington who claimed me as a dependent 'on accident'... I hope you wake up with a penis on your arm. One that doesn't match your skin color, whatever it might be.
