Reader interactivity has always been important at pen. We've setup the BBS (full of games, chat and messages/file exchange), we have the message board, the lame attempt at the irc room, our seti group, etc. I'd like to take this up a level.

I've been toying around the idea of coding up a php based article submission section. Where you can add your own article submissions and then via votes your article is moderated into a category and score (We'll have a top 5 section displayed somewhere on the main page). My whole goal in this would be to design something that would be self contained that'd be mainly controlled by the readers for the readers. Would also be an awesome way to scout out new blood in the future.

Example:

So maybe Amazon submits a article titled "An Innovative New Look at Anal Sex and Anal Bum Covers"

An alert goes up somewhere on the mainpage that a new article has been submitted on 8/8/01 - By Amazon.

Few people read it, and moderate it to Category: "Essay" (these would be predefined) Rating: "4 - Interesting Read" (predefined scale of 1-5)

Since the engine is built on php, the list is easy to sort by rating, category, author, whatever.

Categories would be: Essay, Humor, Techie, and whatever (give me some ideas)

Rating: Based on a 1-5 scale.

Security:

There is a slight issue with security and that being:

Spammers: People could spam the submissions section in hopes of (1) just being a pest and adding useless shit, (2) attempting to fill the HD.

Counter: One article submission per day by IP. Possible IP bans for repeated spamming.

DickHeads: People attempting to mod all articles to nothing.

Counter: One mod per article per IP.

Media - repeat writers would get a login to a small section of the pen HD to upload their image files/soundfiles/clips/whatever to.

Repeat Writers Homepage - Repeat writers could have their name hyper linked to a small homepage section describing ways to contact, who they are, how many cats they have and what songs their cats prefer.

Artcles: That link on the right side

Posts: What you see on the mainpage.

The same people would still be POSTING but people could submit well written Articles (stories, whatnot).

The article section would be something ala fray.com

Sigh.. I'll just scrap the project and do it on another site..
