well, for once i think he made the right choice. (not the non-left choice)
and not the morally correct choice.i mean he made the politically right choice.
the extremists left him a tiny island to
stand on, which they will try to make into

angle, in terms of undercutting those who

I think the stem cell research is a really damn good idea. It could possbily lead to helping people with problems that even surgery can't solve.And as for the moral implications of "fertilizing an embryo, then killing it", fuckit..That's just the morning after pill. I take those after my whoring job every thursday! ------------------

I've been following stem cell research for quite a while. Stem cells are the closest thing in the human body to magic. They react to problems in the body by changing to become whatever the body needs at the time. If we can harness stem cells and learn the enzymatic cues that change their function, stem cell therapy could become the most important medical breakthrough since penicillin.Stem cells are easiest to find in embryos, since they are still in development, and most of their stem cells have yet to become specialized. Although I think that many debilitations should be put to an end, I don't think it's a good idea to cure, for the most part, every disease known to man through stem cells. We're already facing the problem of overpopulation, and in addition to this, many conservatives vouch for an end to abortion, obviously.But, I have to tip my hat to 'Dubya just once. I just love the fact that everyone assumes that Bush couldn't possibly make a good decision by himself. Now I am not a Bush advocate, but anyone who has had any experience with southern politicians, knows what southern politics is all about.I say lets wait until the end of his term before we decide how stupid he is. And what's your point? we are all stupid (except me of course), but we aren't running the country, now are we? Plus it would be illegal for most of us to even run for president, you have to be 35. Probably because you do stupid shit when you're younger than that. Hopefully by the time I'm 50 and running the world I won't be doing so many stupid things as the shrub is, anyway. Interestingly enough, Tommy Thompson, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, used to be the Republican governor of Wisconsin, where I live. He pushed for approval of human stem cell research. Also interesting is the fact that the University of Wisconsin's Regional Primate Center has been doing this in monkeys for years (I heard about it in spring of 1999 while visiting there and the research was pretty advanced at that point). Bizarre political twists aside, I think it's great. They're looking to use it to fix things like Alzheimers. And really, if I remember correctly, it doesn't take many embryos to develop stem cell lines that can be kept for a long time. Why can't people donate eggs and sperm, or unused frozen embryos to the cause if they wanted? Honestly. It's a blob of cells, yes, that can become a human. But it's not one yet. We're talking a cluster you can barely see with the naked eye, not something with fingers and toes and a heartbeat. This is not the same as abortion and it's going to do some good, if all goes as planned. This political bruhaha drives me nuts. Personally, I think most of the fuss is still tied to Roe vs Wade and a major misunderstanding of cloning and related concepts. The Pro-Life groups feel compelled to scream, because if they don't, it may strengthen legal abortion laws and work against their cause. You know, his reasoning is wrong, but it's not completely wacked. Until an embryo is successfully implanted in a womb, it's not viable. In fact, the odds are against a petrie-dish embryo becoming implanted even if it's one of the ones selected for the attempt. In in vitro fertilization, they try to implant several embryos because most don't take. That's why they sometimes end up with multiple births. To be consistent in their thought, the anti-abortion forces should either adopt Hatch's reasoning, or they should be trying to ban in vitro fertilization as well.IP: Logged |

Whether or not I garee with the method of harvesting stem cells (I am of the belief that life begins at conception, but it can be argued here that no conception has actually taken place, therefor I'm not even going to worry about that part of it), I have to think about the result. If someone I cared about could be saved, I'd probably be willing to do just about anything to make that happen. So how could I possibly begrudge someone else that because I'm not sure if the means are moral or not? I'm glad Dubbya made this decision (whether it was his or not), whatever his motives. Basically, you can take the potnetial lives of human beings to save human life. Abortion is not wrong to me, simply because over-population is reality, and if we breed like the rabbits they want us to breed like, the USA will have a population of 2 billion in 100 years. and yes, with new medical advances, you can expect to live that long. I really hate when people try and pretend that over-population is not a problem. These fools fail to realize that we can keep growing, but whose to say we can keep feeding. and what about feeding? go to a farm, kill some innocent lifeforms, and consume them once they are cleaned and served. Vegetables, animals, all the same. So, in order to expand the human race, we'd be forced to damn near eradicate every other species of life to feed our ever growing needs. and even that will not stop us. Cloning could be the key to aiding the religious right's constant prodding for breeding (remember, the pope says condoms are the devil, and contraceptives will send you to hell.) Only a religion would preach such nonsense policy as uninterrupted population growth and no contraception, simply because they benefit from more people being around. They'll always have enough to eat, a place to sleep. They are God's children. Overpopulation doesn't exist when 3 people live in a mansion, but it exists when 30 people live in a 1 story crack house in the ghetto. The religious right hope you never learn that one day you'll be in terrible conditions while they enjoy their luxury suites and cushy deskjobs.
