I just kind of curious. I know a lot of the PenIs readers are in college of some sort. Do your colleges post your email addresses off of their site. My college does, and I think its getting picked up by spammers. I never use my college email address for signing up for useless shit. Its just really started to piss me off. I especially love the spam that is in spanish and other languages I can't read. IP: Logged |

Aggressive bots will harvest your email from anywhere on the web (including your PenIs profile), so every time you make your email available you should expect spam. IP: Logged |

Also, I wouldn't put it past your college administration to sell access to the college mailing lists (that they own) to potential spammers. There is money to be had here. Spam list compilers will pay good money for for several hundred (or thousand, I don't know how big your school is) valid, active email addresses to spam - especially when those addresses are held by a market segment with a huge amount of disposable income.IP: Logged |

I dunno. I'd rather have spam that have happen what my company does. If you ever sign up for a membership (Texaco, Airline memberships, Victoria Secret) what my company does is auto-renews your membership until you say otherwise, with no approval from you. Which generaly leads to many calls from angry customers saying "your product sucks and I want my money back." A little email never hurt anyone... except in my hotmail account which generates about 200+ spam emails per day. I keep it open and full just to piss off hotmail.------------------

Having your email address posted on a PenIs profile isn't exactly going to generate avalanches of spam.Having an email address at any domain which is a major supplier of email addresses WILL generate avalanches of spam. Rationale: I used to run a site that got between 500 and 1500 unique visitors a day. My email address was (is) PROMINENTLY posted right there on the front page, and further on every archive page within the site. That email address is, however, at THAT domain, which nobody else has an email address at but me. Amount of spam typically received? About 3 per MONTH. (Sometimes less.) Hate spam?
