Blood Donors Save Lives

The New York Blood Center provides almost 250 hospitals with the safest possible blood, blood products and transfusion services. Because some of the world’s finest and largest medical facilities are located in our metropolitan areas, they require extremely large quantities of blood
and blood components, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Blood donations provide life supporting treatment to victims of accidents, to surgical patients, and those who need special blood components and derivatives during treatment for cancer and other
diseases.

Cancer treatment now requires vast quantities of platelets and other blood components.
Treatment of hemophiliacs will continue to increase in proportion to the increase in their life
expectancy.

The number of sophisticated surgical procedures like open-heart surgery and organ transplants has
increased dramatically.

Recent studies point to possible breakthroughs in cancer research through the use of materials
made from blood products.

What you can do:

It is critical for all of us to do our part in expanding the blood supply, so everyone who needs
blood, gets it. Blood is life. You can donate whole blood as well as specific life-saving blood
components of blood. All blood types are needed, and a special need exists for Type O.

You can also be admitted into the Bone Marrow Donor Registry.

One day you may need blood yourself. Then you will be thanking the selfless 5% that decided to
suck it up despite a squimishness about "the needle."

The pinch that you feel when you are first set up is short lived, being only an inch long and
about a 1/16th of an inch thick. The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes for whole blood and 60 to 90
minutes for platlets. You can get this done during lunch time! It will make you feel better,

1) knowing that you have just saved someone's life and

2) because you start the process of regenerating blood in your body, thereby stimulating a healthy
process.

Your blood is needed for someone else. Please contact the New York Blood Center or the American Red Cross for more informatoin. Save someone's life, give blood!
