Well, I had a near death experience Sunday night.I was driving to work, listening to U2 singing "Stuck in a Moment (You Can't Get Out of)". Up ahead on a lonely side street, the stoplight is green. I slow slightly to make sure it wasn't going yellow soon since it's a short light. Then I continue through. I remember a flash of white in my headlights coming from the left and I slammed on the brakes but hit the car anyway. I don't remember much of what happened in my car other than that my tail end whipped to the left and I ended up near the far curb but I watched the other car spinning all the way around before crashing into a parked car. Shit. I just had an accident and I was driving Clme's car. I put my hands over my eyes to help myself calm down and heard sirens. I thought "god that was fast" and looked up to see three cars in a row lining up between me and the other car. The police officers leaped out of their cars, pulled out their guns and ran to the other car. More cars pulled in behind me and blocked off the other three intersections. Come to find out, I happened to stop a 6-mile long high speed car chase by running into the guy. A cop later thanked me for stopping him! The driver had stolen this car and had been fleeing ever since the police ran the plates and started chasing him about 15 minutes before. So this guy was 24 years old, no permanent address and was arrested on charges of cocaine possession, possession of drug paraphernelia, driving with a revoked license and driving while intoxicated. He was probably going 35-40 mph when I hit him, whereas I was going 25. If I had not slowed down and had entered that intersection just a few moments earlier, he would have rammed my driver side door instead of me hitting his passenger side. I still bent up the front of Chris's car, but I walked away with a slightly drivable car and a sore back instead of critical injuries. The asshole in the other car wasn't hurt. I drove the rest of the way to work to make sure we didn't have an emergency and to tell them I was going home. Then I drove the shuddering, rumbling, shaking car all the way home at 5-10mph under the limit. Now I slam on the brakes when I see movement out of the corner of my eye, my back hurts and I have no health insurance. Some dumb fuck who is old enough to know better has changed my life. The cops told me I was extremely calm after it happened, but as more time goes on, I just get more and more pissed off. And I keep replaying it in my head while awake and asleep and I keep having horrifying visions of what could have happened if I were going just a tiny bit faster. Plus, since my car has a leaking radiator and I was driving Chris's car, the insurance go-around is more annoying than usual. I will say this, the police were amazingly sweet after this happened and they kept coming over to make sure I was ok and they were so nice. Very unlike the sarcasm you see when getting a speeding ticket. -Bex IP: Logged |

Wow. Well, I wish that I could give you some sage (or even not sage) advice right now... All that I can say is that I (and I imagine the majority of PenIsites out there) am glad that you're OK. Well, kinda OK. And that Mr. High-Speed Chase should have something horrible done to his food. Or something.IP: Logged |

my advice for you would be to let clme to go to a whole bunch of strip clubs and also bring in another female into the mix for a little three way action, but that's just my opinion.IP: Logged |

So does mister felony coke head get to pay for the damages and health care costs? Seems like he's responsible for the damages he caused. Hope you at least get to fix clme's car and get your back looked at. I've been in 4 car accidents in my life. All I walked away from and all were when I was pretty young, 14 and younger. Glad you came out ok.IP: Logged |

That totally sucks. Minding your own business and hosed by a whacked out druggie.BTW, would you like to see this person in prison? or, should he be given parole and sent to rehab. Being the victim, your perspective is quite relevant. -Marcel IP: Logged |

I don't know what would help this guy. Given that he was drunk and/or high, carrying cocaine, stealing cars and driving with a revoked license, I don't know that parole and rehab is really going to help him much.Maybe he really needs some rough anal prison sex for a few years to show him that life on the outside really isn't so bad. I'm just pissed that I am going to end up paying several hundred dollars out of pocket for medical expenses while waiting to find out what is happening with insurance. Chris is going to have car expenses either from paying the deductible on this one or having to buy a new one. And all because some fucker couldn't keep his stoned ass on a couch somewhere instead of hitting the streets in a stolen car. -Bex IP: Logged |

This just in:The insurance company is considering the car totalled. We need to clean it out and give it up and then start looking for a new car. Figure a couple thousand bucks more than what Chris will get back in order to get a halfway decent car. A 1992 Toyota with over 170,000 miles ain't worth much on paper. As an addendum to my above statement, I hope that asshole becomes a "bottom" for every horny beefy male in cell-block B. I may have to set up a Pay-Pal account and become a Camgirl to pay expenses. -Bex IP: Logged |

Yes, quite. Or would you like to see them given the option to do a shorter stint in a labor camp earning $40/day, payable to YOU, until your expenses are paid off? I miss the good old days, when assjulios like that could just be deported to Australia. Ideally, do you want: a) This guy to not do the same stuff again, b) Compensated for your loss, or c) Vengence -assuming you don't get to mix & match. Which one best serves you? Which one best serves the perp? Which one best serves Society?

Given that reimbursing Chris and I for our loss is already over $3000 and will be more if you add in the extra expense of getting a new car, I think having to fork out a $5000 or so fine is both nice restitution, nice vengeance and may give him at least a slight idea that what he did was bad. Also, add in paying to fix the stolen car that I smashed and the parked car he hit as he spun out of our crash and you'd have a pretty damn big "fine" for this asshole to pay. -Bex IP: Logged |

It's all irrelevant. He'll probably get a brief stint in prison or parole and we'll never see any money. I'm sure he has no car insurance so we're taking it up the ass, along with the other two car owners, whom I dearly hope had insurance of their own.Apparently the insurance guy stopped counting at $4000 worth of damage before even taking into account the frame, engine compartment damage and the exhaust system which was knocked loose. So Chris gets a crappy $2400 for his car and that isn't going to buy a fucking clunker, much less something drivable. I wish I had been driving my own piece of shit. I could just cry seeing his sweet little Toyota all crumpled up in the driveway. I work all weekend with large animals and I'm supposed to avoid heavy lifting because of my back. Shya. Right. There's no justice in this world. -Bex IP: Logged |

And I still find it hard to grasp how people get the idea that old poeple are the ones who have next to no health insurance in this country. People our age (I'm thirty*coughcough*) are the least insured group in America, and yet we are the least likely to get together and collectively bitch enough about it to have Medicare laws changed.IP: Logged |

Update:I can ask for restitution payments for lost wages and uncovered expenses caused by this guy. No guarantee I'll get them, but it's worth a shot. Get this, this was his THIRD Offense for DUI and his FIFTH offense of driving after revocation. I get to put in my opinion on what his sentence should be. Options include jail, prison, alcohol/drug treatment, community service, resititution, fine, probation, counseling, deferred prosecution or other. Think they'll let me write in violent ass-raping as an option? I'll just check off prison. Goddammit. Scratch that. He should be forced to fill out all of these fucking forms and talk to the insurance agents. The list of gomers assigned to this case and their attendant phone numbers is longer than my list of friends. -Bex IP: Logged |

Welllllll. Ya know he was probably "set up" on the first 2 DUI's and actually innocent. Even if he WAS guilty of the first 2 DUI's we really should NOT put people in jail for drug offences. Our legal system is after all, far too harsh on substance abusers. Right Bex?
