I think he's a bit far to the right and I think that he can't be counted on to defend justice from the danger coming from the far right (although I must admit this doesn’t bother me much). But for a man with views like his and with an opportunity like 9/11 before him, he sure isn't doing anywhere near as much as he might to get some ACLU alarmist shit into law; the predictable wish for relaxed laws on surveillance has actually turned out to be fairly modest and includes little that most liberals of sensible rather than ideological demeanor can't accept.
When he becomes less preoccupied with the terrorist threat, it’s back to Roe vs. Wade.
Credit where credit’s due++.

Liberal perspective, anyone?

I used to be totally againse surveilance of any kind until I found that websight with the "secret" webcam files...

Just imagine what kind of pr0n the CIA and FBI could provide us with!!!!

By the way, applauding any kind of limitation of personal freedom's, no matter whats been blown up, is not going to get appluase from me.

Wiretap and search laws are already quite scary, thank you, as are laws concerning deporting/holding non-citizens.
All I've heard about the proposed laws is that they greatly increase Law Enforcement's freedom to do stuff without getting a judge's ok, and they greatly expand the definition of terrorism. These would be great ideas, except that no-one has ever even suggested that they would have been effective in preventing any previous terrorist action, including 9/11.

Yes, they would rid law enforcement of a few more of those pesky civil liberty restrictions, but it just amounts to a greater ability to spy on Americans, and with less oversight. Call me wacky, but I had an idea that a little spying overseas might produce the kind of intelligence we need.

All this, and expansion of "terrorism" to boot, until practically any computer tinkering or public assembly could, by some definition, fit into the idea of terrorism. The sponsor's answer is "Well, it could be read that way, but that's not how it will be applied". Suuu-u-u-ure.
