Okay, here's the deal...I'm in a red hot debate with some guy over who suXX0r worse, AMD or Intel. He somehow believes (all of these are quotes):1)"those things break down like its their job"
2)"ive seen more athlons burn up or slag down just because they are made shitty"
3)"sub standard manufacturing"
4)"and there are things that pentium 4's do that out perform athlons too" Now, point 4 I can agree with. This is the same no matter WHAT processors you compare. But...I think he's an ass. =D
Has ANYONE here experienced anything in the realm of what he's talking about with the newer Athlons? ------------------

I've heard people talk about amd chips burning up or frying but really I'd chalk that more up to user error than anything else.I've owned a lot of amd chips.. I've been pretty rough with all of them and never had one fail on me yet. I've thrown a duron 600 and pumped it up to 1016mhz, during summer and one case fan. I've worked with k6 machines that have been abused (heatsink fan barely moving) that have worked just fine. I've owned many k6, duron, tbird, etc setups. I've also owned my share of intel setups. The material of the past amds haven't been the best but they also haven't been extremely shitty. If you look at the new AXP chips they are made with a different material, the die is lower, etc. Making it a more sturdy chip, they also require less power which means less heat. p4 out preforms amd in some video stuff. Or if something is coded in whatever the new p4 monopolizing instruction set is. Is it worth the price? Thats up to what you use it for, typically intel has dominated the business market but we are now considering a dual amd axp setup for our work servers over intel. Which is cool because intel has much more capitol and that just means the p5 (or whatever the come up with) will just r0x0r the b0x0rs. Competition rules. IP: Logged |

i have seen, in a video, a t-bird burn up, pretty fucking cool too. i have only heard of one actually happening; the guy moved places and the hsf fell off he turned on his box then the next thing you smell is some sweet amd goodness. i would never buy intel, unless their price justified better performance over amd. i mean if you compare the new 1800 xp chip, runs 1.53ghz, it hands the p4, 2.0ghz, ass in almost every catergory but in some quake 3 test. better yet just read this. tech-report does a damn good job at comparing chips. then shove that in your friends face.IP: Logged |

I think the heat thing is overblown, I've never seen a properly-cooled Tbird blow up. I've seen all kinds of shit, including but not limited to computer parts, fuck up when you install it incorrectly, tho. P4 benchmarks on current software are abysmal I'm starting to think AMD's should have just named their CPUs by their clockspeed, to highlight the discrepancy. Like, if a 1.53GHz chip outperforms a 2.0GHz chip, maybe there's something wrong with the 2.0GHz chip, right?But I don't think Intel intended it to be better than a P3 on current software. It performs much faster when you compile your code with Intel's new compiler though, which is naturally optimized for the P4. I mean, that would be true of any cpu theoretically... but the point here is to make people adopt the compiler, not to release a great chip.
It seems to me more like a big Fuck You to AMD. Like, if you wanna compete in the consumer market, you're gonna have to license all the new stuff we've patented since the last time you licensed to stay competitive. ------------------
