It comes with 4-color CGA card. I bet I got a steal @$2099! They said it was $3500 with a 10 megabyte Harddrive. I don't need one of those. Do I rock or what?IP: Logged |

I remember getting excited when Clme had that old PS-2Damn that powerswitch was cool.

By the LATE 90's I had a 486/66 thank you!
But the PS/2 I had before that had only the shitty internal speaker because the people in the computer stores and pawn shops had never heard of "MicroChannel".

Ohhh. It was 1337 though. Two 40 meg hard drives (With disk doubler running for an effective size of 130 megs total), EGA/VGA switchable video card, DOS 6.0 and I had even loaded win3.11 so I could play solitaire.On the bright side: You dont have many IRQ conflicts when you dont have a sound card... I did have those computers hooked to a TV though, using some cheap little adapter that plugged into the back of the computer. -Chris IP: Logged |

My first pc was a 386 SX 16 Mhz with 1 mb of ram and had a huge harddrive of 40 mb. You could never fill that up. It also had a 5.25" drive and a 1.2 mb 3.5" drive. Damn she was a fine machine back in 1990.IP: Logged |

(secondhand of course) Tandy 1000 series (8088) 2 5.25 inch drives
(one later switched to 3.5)
No more disk swapping for those text based games!!!!! 640k memory
No more out of memory errors... oh wait thats a lie. 20 MB Card drive

Hrm... allow me to get much further in depth than at all necessary:That 8088 was the "family" machine that everyone did their word processing or general fooling around on. Basically, unless someone needed a school report done no one cared if it died. (and thus, since no one cared, it never did). My dad built a 386 in 89 that I "wasn't allowed to touch" (That lasted about 6 weeks). He built several more computers(486's) after that. He seems to build now as a hobby or to help friends out. I got that PS/2 in 94. Upgraded to the 486 (built from spare parts from "real" machines) in 96. Built a 200 in 98. Rebuilt/upgraded it as a 300 in 99. Upgraded that to a 500 last month, and Built a 1.4ghz system 2 months ago. That is my personal computer history  I wont get into the computers I've built for others... ATARI! hehe. That was the closest thing I had to a computer back in the early 90's Finally got an Acer Aspire with an incredible 133mhz! Even had a 1.2gb hard drive! Then got a Compaq...
It all goes downhill from there.
The compaq was a 400mhz P2 with 12gb QUANTUM BIGFOOT hdd... and 64mb RAM... that bitch is STILL up and running after almost 5 years of service. Something like that anyways... It's the only Compaq that actually works right even tho the hard drive IS shit. Parents bought another Compaq (CURSE THEM).

Heh... my first PC was a TRS-80 Model I Level I, with a whopping 4K of RAM - and a BASIC interpreter that fit in 4K of ROM.  Graphics consisted of hi-bit ASCII rendered in 64 columns by 20 rows.  It's probably also worth noting that this thing was so incredibly primitive, they discontinued its manufacture in 1981 because it failed to meet FCC radio frequency emission regulations (!) - I distincly remember my irritating stepsisters disconsolately whining about the scan-line interference the TRS-80 made on the TV when they were watching Strawberry Shortcake cartoons while I was playing Trek III.  But hey, the hell with the bitches - in my family, the misbegotten idea that the majority ruled when it came to kid-vs-kid decisions generally meant that, when there were two girls and one boy, you fucking well weren't going to see anything but Smurfs and Strawberry Shortcake and the like on Saturday mornings anyway, so what else was I gonna do? My very first computer was a 486 DX33 with 8Mb of RAM, a very fast Diamond Stealth32 1Mb videocard and a 420Mb harddisk. Man I was so happy with it, playing my warezed copies of Doom and Doom2 again and again and again.
Later it got upgraded to a DX40 (BIG upgrade ) and after that an AMD DX-120.
A 2-speed cdrom was also added somewhere along the line.
Much later, when faran and I were roommates we connected our PC's with coax cable we got from a friend and some Western Digital nic's that got saved from a garbage dump. Ahhh the memories.
Duke Nukem 3D is still the most fun I've ever had on a LAN game.IP: Logged |

I had access to my dads commodore VIC20 for awhile too... but that really wasn't mine. Mmmm... tape drive. I wish that thing still worked. I liked the ROM's that would plug into the back.It is where I learned BASIC though. (What little bit I remember). After we got the 8088 I remember my dad getting these 5.25" disks with magazines that would have "new" programs on them. Half the time they had never been debugged so if I wanted to play them I had to fix the typo's in the BASIC code. mmmm.... text based games... I think Jimbo wins so far though. Damn him anyway. My grade-schools computer lab was full of commodores "networked" to share a single tape drive. Half the class would be spent trying to teach some people how to type the 6 line program that would allow them to access it They wanted everyone to learn basic BASIC so that they could be computer literate in the 21st century... When I went in to the radio station where my dad worked on the weekends, I used the acoustically coupled modem on the TRS-80 Model II Business Machine there to dial into The Source and play Scott Adams adventure games. 110 baud, no error correction! Yeah baby!  It looked a lot like the brownish one on the right, although that's not the exact model. Ours had s00p3r-1337 velcro straps that you could use to snug the phone headset down even tighter into the foam rubber cups for "better quality connections." w00t? IP: Logged |

Oh, fuck all y'all with your I'm-older-skool-than-you thread. Me and Fen bootlegged our first games in or around 1980, and when we got our first computer (an Atari 800) we didn't get a disk drive, cuz they didn't make 'em yet. The Atari seemed to kick ass over all the Commodores and Apples our friends had, but we could never figure out why they weren't more popular. Only years later did I discover that Atari essentially fucked themselves by not releasing the specs and instruction set (primarily so that other people wouldn't release games that were far cooler than Atari titles, which they did anyway). ------------------
