In another 6 weeks your employer(s) will begin mailing 2001 earnings/tax statements.
NOW is the time to start formulating a "reasonable" deduction scheme.
Here's a few things I tried in the past
and their associated result.1) claimed office space in primary residence
result: got away with it, I understand this is a BIG audit flag these days. 2) One year I claimed that I was in the middle of a nasy divorce and my attorney recommended that I file an extension (which I did) and send them the estimated tax bill (which was about $2,900 so I sent them $100.00) and said I would get back to them after the divorce (this was for FY 1995).
result: Still haven't heard from them regarding this. *fingers crossed*, I think statute of limitations is 7 years. 3) I "negelcted" to claim some side contract jobs one year.
result: They caught me, BIG fines, monthly payments to the IRS.
