Err.. this maybe some browserissue specific to my machine, but why is it that when I visit penIs from work I get a Quicktime pop-up telling me I need to install QT to run "this" (?) feature.

I thought that penIs was comprised of people who refuse to install QT because it's a "*(&#%&$@# bloated piece of crap".

That's just you, dude. Neither me nor Eod has QT installed on our boxen at home, and I've never seen that popup. And incidentally I'd like to take a moment to say that the little volume dial in the quicktime player may be the single dumbest design choice I've ever seen in an application.

Heh. That wheely is horrid indeed. The awesome but rarely updated Interface Hall of Shame has a great review of the QuickTime 4 Player.

Yeah, I read it lamfear, that's what I was thinking of when I said that about the volume control. Except I would have sounded much more interesting if no one remembered that article. You fudgepacker.

And yeah, feel free to email Eod thousands of times to tell him how much you like that midi. Just don't DOS him, because you'd be DOSing me too, and that's just not right.

1. if you haven't installed QuickTime, media player will play the background MIDI
2. if you've installed QuickTime, it will hijack the MIDI playing functions
3. if you installed QuickTime without the QuickTime Music component, you get the "you need to download stuff" message
4. if you DID install QuickTime WITH the Music component, EVEN IF YOU MUTE YOUR MIDI CHANNEL the fucking QT component will first UN-mute your MIDI channel, then MAXIMIZE ITS FUCKING VOLUME. There is no way around this, except...
5. It's just barely possible through really tweaking the UI in ways it wasn't designed for to delete all possible MIDI devices from the QuickTime plug-in. In which case it won't be able to play MIDIs anymore, THANK GOD.
6. eod is gay.

there's a nice little app for win 95/98 that you can find at http://www.annoyances.org called tweakUI (there's specific versions for 95 and 98, and there's a nice little involved install, where you gotta install the windows resource kit first and then to install tweakUI you have to right-click while holding your left nut and singing the theme music from the smurfs and all other sorts of wierd gay windows install quirks)


BUT ANYWAY my point is that tweakUI often helps you ..uh, tweak stuff in the uh, user interface, hence it's unfathomable name and stuff -- and one of those things is basically what programs are allowed to do (with your audio-outs, for example).

which you can do via the registry and regedit but why would you want to?

or i guess you could just be smart enough to not install QT in the first place; there's not a whole lot of quality porn that requires a QT player...
