I thought I heard somewhere that witches were more or less satans mistresses and in exchange for having sex and dancing with him and other demons in the woods he gave them their powers.

in other words satan said fuck me and i'll give you the power to hurt the people you don't like.

course theres likely a lot of different versions as well.
