For me, it was by far "Planet of the Apes". I can't believe I actually paid to see this shit. Tim Burton used to be one of Hollwyood's most innovative and talented filmmakers but that piece of crap was clearly the low-mark of his career. Stupid ending and a horrible script for Dirk Diggler.

What's your pick?

Harry Potter. I'll tell you why. The books are WAY better than the movie. Oh, don't get me wrong, it was cast well, except for the part of Harry. Seems to me this kid only got the part 'cause he looked like Harry should, but the kid is no actor. He has the cheesiest smile I have ever seen and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that later in life he becomes a child molestor.
Now, Hagrid.... well, that could not have been cast better.
Alan rickman as Professor Snape? I THOUGHT he would do a good job, but didn't.

If you have kids, by all means, go see the movie. The Quidditch match was pretty cool.
If you are considering going to see it alone, don't waste your money. Wait till it comes on HBO.

"... has the newest and coolest dinosaurs EVER!"

that wasnt a little kid saying that, either. it was the narrator of the commercial.

Definitely Traffic, though I sat through it (waiting for the punch line) but walked out of Moulon Rouge (hey, it was 3 movies for $3.50, and they serve BEER).

If I wanted to sit through an anti-drug propoganda movie I'd pop in my CD of "Reefer Madness," which is about as realistic in it's portrayal of drug use, but doesn't stoop to trying to frighten whitebread parents with graphic images of white schoolgirls being fucked by black dealers for a hit.

What the hell? Harry Potter? Bad? Fuck that! It wasn't perfect, not as cool as the book, but worst movie of the year? I'm throwing down the glove, person I don't know. Explain yourself further or die.

If you're ever in the Salt Lake area, there's a similar place called Brewvies. Being underage, I've never set foot into this fabled emporium of film and beer, but everyone that I know who's been there say that it reeks of awesomeness.

speaking of which, 'requiem for a dream' altho it didn't come out this year, i saw it for the first time this year; i put it off forever because of the hype it kept getting, which annoyed the fuck out of me. i finally saw it at a friend's insistance, and JESUS FUCKING CHRIST is it a depressing movie.

worst movie i've seen this year...probably Jurassic Park 3, but then again, i only went in cos it was raining.

the best this year has been Amelie. (i've even been able to forgive Jean-Pierre Jeunet for Alien4 because of Amelie. it's that good.)

Jumpin' Jayzus on a pogo stick!!!

I can't believe that some freak actually thinks that TRAFFIC was a bad movie!!! Requiem for a Dream was a bad movie?

Good Christ! What's your favorite movie dood? Booty Call?

Just because a movie uses drug references that are above the intellectual level of Half Baked, it does not make it "bad." And who says a movie can't be depressing? I admit, I can't watch either of those movies 10 times a week, but good god! I seriosuly spit water on my monitor when I saw someone said Traffic was the worst movie of the year. That has honestly got to be the worst movie review EVER.

I had to come back and edit, because I forgot to mention a couple of shitty movies.

Swordfish really fucking sucked, so much so that Halle's Hoo-Hoo's did not even really make it better for me.

And 15 Minutes was the same way, except exchange Robert Deniro for the Hoo-Hoo's.

Actually, in the case of 15 Minutes, I think the movie was actually WORSE because of Deniro's presence. It was just insulting.

Anyway, those are 2 of the worst movies I have seen in a long time, not just this year.

I wholeheartedly second Mission to Mars as the worst movie ever.

Haven't seen it, though it sounds a lot like Scary Movie, to which I was drug by the same jackass that tricked me into Traffic. 2001 wasn't really a banner year for film, IMHO, but if I had to choose, I'd say Momento- though I liked it best the first time, because I was getting a round of beers up at the bar and missed the first 5 minutes - adds a LOT of mystery to the story. Headwig & the Angry Inch wasn't bad either, though I had to leave before it was over.

Oh come ON! That flick blew donkey. Sure, the acting was spectacular, the cast was perfect, the editing and directing were spot-on, but the STORY??!?!

STORY#1: Innocent white girl from an upper-middle-class family (THAT COULD BE YOURS!!) experiments with pot because her mother was a hippY in college (EXPERIMENTING IN COLLEGE WILL MAKE YOU A BAD PARENT!!) and doesn't keep her beaten into line (BE EVER VIGILANT, AND NEVER LET YOUR KIDS EXPLORE!!). As all pot-smokers do, she's soon free-basing while getting scrogged by her slimey boyfriend (ALL DRUGS ARE GATEWAY DRUGS!!!- WELL, EXCEPT ALCHOHOL AND TOBACCO, WHICH ARE POINTEDLY ABSCENT FROM THE FILM). In the end, she's getting bagged by her black dealer (THE ULTIMATE DEBASEMENT OF WHITE LADIES- FEAR IT AND FIGHT IT!!) for free smack. Finally, her rigid, Republican dad, who's too busy with work to raise his kid, becomes the hero and saves her by being a hard-ass.

STORY #2 Drug dealer's wife finds out what her husband does for a living AFTER he's arrested for it, at first hates him for it, but then, to maintain her standard of living, takes over the business and has the rat killed to get him out of jail (DRUG DEALERS AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE ALL EVIL- NEVER INNOCENT, SO DON'T FEEL BAD WHEN THEIR FAMILIES ARE RUINED AND THEIR HOMES SEIZED BECAUSE THE DEA FOUND THREE POT PLANTS IN THEIR BACK 40)

STORY #3 Cop gets killed, partner works to avenge him and carry on the good fight. Of the dozens of cops I've met off-duty, in real life, their are maybe four that I wouldn't punch in the face if I could. 'nuff said.

STORY #4 Mexican cop fights drug dealers and corruption (USE TORTURE IF NECESSARY- DEALERS ARE PURE EVIL!!) because he just wants to be able to watch a little league game in peace. I've lived in Mexico; the only threat to public safety there, aside from the bus drivers, is the cops. Sexually frustrated bumpkins with shotguns and assault rifles, wandering around the streets making $6/day- sounds like a great recipe for fighting corruption, eh? The areas where dealers and cartels hold sway are the safest, because they keep the cops paids-off to behave.

Sub-Story: The gay hit man (GAY PEOPLE ARE PERVERTED AND EVIL- EXTERMINATE THEM!!)

edited because I never got around to saying that calling it "The Worst Film of the Year" wasn't due to the cinematography, which was among the best of the year, but to the underlying messages, and the all-to-effective way they are pushed on the viewer.

I'm easily hypnotized and influenced (and distracted by my own flatulance), so I've made a point of studying brainwashing and subliminal techniques, and movies like this make the hair on the back of my neck stand up, especially when I find myself nodding along, like all the other sheep in the theatre, to concepts ideologies I oppose.

Oh Joshy, how can I possibly counter everyhting you said? It seems to me, that, like many people including myself, the War ON Drugs is a touchy subject for you. But every message that you got from that movie is about the exact opposite of what I got.

So, no upper class white kid has EVER gotten hooked on Crack or Smack? Really? And in the movie, if you recall, it was the Drug Czar Dad who was depicted as the bad parent, cuz he was not around, and had no idea what was going on. I won't touch the gateway drug subject, because I don't rememeber what the "first" drug shown being consumed by the kids, but I thought it was Coke.

Ok, I thought it was a bit unbelievable that she did not know what her husband did for a living too, but not necessarily impossible.
HOWEVER, they won in the end, the husband was out, they still had their home and shit, the scumbag partner got what he deserved, and they were having a wholesome birthday party for their kids. How does that depict them as the pawns of satan who can never get fucked over enough. Where did you see that?

quote:

Not 'nuff said. I admit, there are plenty of asshole power trippin cops out there. But there are plenty of asshole Starbucks workers, and asshole gardeners too. There are plenty of cops who are regular guys, some might even be smart and/or somewhat heroic! Seriously! And I am not blinded by the haze of 9/11 nationalism when I say this either. I just think that it is a really pathetic poseur whiteboy pose to say "ALL COPS ARE FUCKING PRICKS MAN, FUCK THEM!" Don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of the DEA, ATF, or most other law enforcement acronym's you can think of, but I entertain the idea that some of thses cops are just regular guys trying to do what they think is right and stay alive in the process. Maybe it's a fantasy, but there it is.

Benicio did not torture the hitman, the General had that done, and Benicio did not really like it. That was obvious to me. I have not been to Mexico, but everything you said about it is exactly what I have heard, and believe. And that is how the movie depicted it, entirely corrupt and fucked up. But is it entirely impossible that there could be 1 guy who tried to make a difference?

quote:
Sub-Story: The gay hit man (GAY PEOPLE ARE PERVERTED AND EVIL- EXTERMINATE THEM!!)

Andrew Cunanan and Dahmer among others, were seriously fucked up people who were also gay. Were they evil because they were gay, or because they killed people?

To me, that alone would exclude it from having the "The Worst Film of the Year" title.

At any rate, we can agree to disagree, but any movie that can actually spawn a mostly rational debate instead of just Ooh's and Ahh's at the pretty pretty 'splosions is a good movie.

I'd like to add another vote to the "Planet of the Apes" column. What a load of crap that was. And the "twist?" Sooo fucking predictable. Especially if you've read the original novel.

Oh, and where the hell did they get HORSES?!

But I saw that at the Bay Area's equivalent of the places you've talked about in Ohio, FL, etc., the Parkway Theatre in Oakland.
www.picturepubpizza.com.

Two-for-one on Wednesdays ($5), plus $10 pitchers of good microbrews. Cheap date. And if the movie sucks, oh well, you can get loaded.
