Alllllllllll Right:Just in time for the Holidays: -Installed VMware 3.0 under Win2K -Created "Virtual Machine" consisting of Red Hat Linux 7.2 -Internet access Via Mozilla 5.0 This is great, the best of both worlds. Still having problems configuring print services on our MS network. This is an outstanding product!

Well... you could always install the Linux version of VMWare then...and put Win2K on that. Just a thought. SG IP: Logged |

I am more productive/comforatble in a UNIX environment. Unfortunately, the current shop standard is MS SQL Server with DB2/AIX on the side. So Win32 as a base OS makes sence for me. VMware seems to function bug free thus far and performance has been a non-issue. My configuration is: PIII @700Mhz (laptop) with 192MB allocated to the Linux virtual machine (512k total ram). Now of I could only get samba 2.2.2 to compile under Linux 7.2....grrrrrrr f---ing compile errors. By the way, driver support for Linux has come a LONG way. IP: Logged |

No. I would classsify VMware as a serious enterprise production support class of software and probable is not commonly mixed into a gaming environment. Besides, I thought you hard core gamers had dedicated boxes for your craft.

Uh, no. Those are called "consoles". I prefer computers... and I don't have room for TWO fucking PCs in my living room, attached to my stereo and etc etc etc...Being versatile is what makes it a computer, and not an appliance. IP: Logged |

marcel: which distro? you're saying 7.2 so i'm guessing redhat (or suse). what problem in particular are you having compiling samba? ...and do you need to compile it yourself? i'm sure there's binaries available from RH or SuSE.jimbo: have you considered using a drive swapping system? it's almost as good as having two totally seperate systems, and there's no worry w/r/t drive failure fucking everything up. the only PITA about it is that you have to setup a whole 'nother HD with OS and then tweak that OS install to get it where you like it. I did this a while ago (i'm back to a dual boot) with two HDs (a 10 gig for win98se and a 5gig for suse 7.1, since suse was for "working" and windows for "playing") -- the only real bitch i had is that you can't easily and readily transfer files between systems (i.e. mp3s) and you have to burn them to CDRs and transfer *that* way. ------------------ "On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm soooo drunk."
