1. yes you can
2. you need more than a "program". Got $1000 to spend on a burner?

a grand ? damn.

i have the burner my pewter came with, don't think it's up to the task. just, paying $25cnd a dvd seems a trifle excessive...is there any way u can xfer the dvd movie to a svcd, then burn that ? i have a dvd drive, and my dvd player supports svcd

You'd either have to lose a LOT of quality, or else span it to SEVERAL vcd's... a vcd only holds 670MB or so of data, whereas DVD's hold several gigabytes.

Yeah if you don't mind 2 - 4 cds per movie it isn't that bad to rip a dvd and burn to a vcd.

or download a dvd rip and burn to vcd as the case may be.

A DVD burner is roughly $500 these days but the thing they'll rape you for is the blank DVDs. They're approximately $10-15 a piece so if you make a coaster, you can cry about it.

i guess in time the technology will become more widespread, and cheaper. Just have to sit and wait

Ya dood, I just picked up a dvd-ram drive, which is a little bit different that what you are reffering to. DVDRams use cartridge media, that is, a dvd contained in a cartridge. That means i obviously cannot pop it into a dvd player. What i don't understand is why the media is between $20-$30. How could it possibly be that expensive to make? I don't care about copying ripping dvds (for its main use) I just want a cheap backup solution. It still is cheap, but not cheap enough for me!

backup ? I just burn regular cds for backup. I mean, that's a lot of files.

I want to rip off the film industry. Get a friend that works at Blockbuster to bring home a bunch of dvds and then burn the shit outta them.

On another note, I've been looking for the Saving Private Ryan dvd for about 4 days now, since I got back home with my dvdplayer. The city where I live is fair-sized, and there is not one copy of SPR anywhere. What. The. Hell. I even went to the rental places, hoping to pick up a used copy. Can't take it. I need to watch it NOW.
