A few months ago I installed a Place racing Cold air intake in my 99 Maxima to augment performance. http://www.placeracing.com/canissanser.htm The result is a snappier power band with a substantial increase in pull in the 4,500RPM+ range. Nice mod, it performs as advertised. The down side however is noise. When the throttle in nailed there is a loud GROWL from the fender well, which is where the filter has been relocated. The filter exists between the car body and the plastic fender well, which prevents water and gunk from going directly into the filter. So essentially, the filter is housed in a flimsy plastic box, which increases resonant intake noise. I would like to minimize this noise. I am looking for acoustic dampening suggestions: If I could line the flimsy plastic with some material (such as applied to the inside of speakers) it may significantly reduce the db level. Question is: what material, it must be flexible and bondable to plastic, also not absorb water (such as foam would do). Any suggestions from you engineering types?

hmm i doubt it would be standing waves, but obviuosly sounds like mad resonating... and thats always a problem (except for your speakesr =D ... ) look into some plastic resin shit, a lot of guys i know use that for speaker box (ported) to get a dB or few tenth out of they're system, b/c obviuosly chamber flex 'isnt' a good thing.... Get some DynoMat from a car stereo shop. It's dense, thin, flexible, and can be glued to about anything. Blocks noise and deadens vibration- so you can both attach it to the plastic box as a dampener, and put it on the firewall or inside behind the dash and foot-well carpeting to block the noise. Check out www.dynamat.com. This stuff is incredible. It used to be sold at Best Buy, and there was a display with two bells. One bell was normal, the other was coated with the dynamat, and it hardly rang when you pressed down the button.Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

or for the quick cheap ghetto fix go to the hardware store and get that spray-on tool handle covering stuff, you know the liquid rubberized grip stuff like you'd put on a screwdriver or hammer handle or something.IP: Logged |

If your running an open air intake anytime you jump on WOT then your gonna hear it scream. Thats half the fun..Personally I enjoy the sound of a well modded and tuned engine. I don't have a stereo anymore (since they stole my subs, amps and headunit) but I'm just as happy to listen to my Borla Muffler, intake and the absent midmuffler all sing together.

Damn, I hate to agree with Joshy. But this seems to be the overall response from the fanatics at maxima.org. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=90395 Thanks for the response everyone. BTY EOD, PIAA now has (Super Plasma H3's) said to be @ 5000K, ordered them today. IP: Logged |

After talking with LamFear, I'm pretty sure you guys have no clue between a riced out car and a car with some engine work and sport suspension. Aftermarket work != rice; Aftermarket work == Sport and Econo boxes spanking BMW M3's at autocross events. How is an open air intake rice? Unless it is sucking in hot engine air (like most honda intakes) but as we noticed Marcel's intake is nice and the open air intake does not suck from the engine bay. How is replacing all the piping from the catback (increased to 2.25"), removing the restricting midmuffler and opening it up with a higher quality free flowing borla exhaust, remapping the ecu to smooth out the idle on 268 degree TT camshaft and remapping it to run on only 90+ octane (mpg gain, big torque gain, hp gain), changing out those stupid cusion motor mounts with nice stiff mounts that don't let the engine jump around in the bay.. Short Shift kit.. Still don't see the rice yet.. Handling.. I don't think you want me to rattle off all the suspension work. Rice would be.. Replacing the exhaust with a 4" pipe and yet the piping back to the cat is only 2". "upgrading" your suspension by cutting the springs. having blow off values with no turbo.. Huge shopping cart spoilers when the car is a fwd and could never get going that fast to need any sort of downforce. hood scoops that don't actually have an opening to the engine. Large intercooler bumpers with no turbo or intercooler.. neon lights under the car.. neon lights inside the car.. ...etc..etc...etc... IP: Logged |

I can't talk about cars a) because I know virtually nothing about them and b) because I am very partial to my '93 Camry that has had nothing done to it since I got it but has been treating me very well. And which gets better gas mileage than either of my parents' (newer) cars. IP: Logged |

You are correct sir. (kinda..) http://www.penismightier.com/faq.html#fridge By the way... the real ghetto way (no offense to Jimbo of course) would be to get some of that "great stuff" spray insulation material... you know, the stuff that hardens into styrofoam.

Rice is just a common term used for Japanese vehicles, I've found. Back when I had my bikes, I ran into the term 'rice burner' a lot. Sometimes it wasn't meant as a derogatory remark, but usually it was. And usually, I was like "Whatever, meet me at that stop light, bitch." I especially loved schooling musclecar owners - you know, Corvette C5, new Pontiac FireB4RD (those heavy bastards, what are they THINKING?) etc. They learn that burning rice is a good thing if you can pull 0-60 in half the time they can. "Rice Burner? Indeed, sir. Indeed." -3 IP: Logged |

I've been reworking my old 75 Datsun longbed slowly (things would speed up a lot if I wasn't such a broke dick), one of the first things I did was scam tires from a friends shop. They were on a 3/4 ton chevy (the lug pattern is exactly the same) and they're 15 by 30" tall by 9.5" wide which looks pretty crazy, but the thing has huge wheelwells and as long as I dont crank on the steering wheel like a diseased monkey they don't rub. I love the tire height but 9.5 is way too wide for good traction (not to mention the rub and decreased turn radius), so when I get new skins I'll probably get 30 by 7 duelers (consumer reports has em #1 and they should throw a pretty good roost if I get rid of those mud flaps)I cranked up the torsion bars as high as they would go, so now I have 11 and a half inches of clearance up front and a touch more in the back. I'll most likely do a 2" body lift when I get ahold of some blocks and longer u-bolts. The fuel tank is completely shot. It was a farm truck for a long time before it quit running, and it was parked under a fir tree (I know because the area below the wipers was filled flush to the top with needles) with an empty gas tank. I've been through about 7 fuel filters so far, and added an electric fuel pump in behind the mechanical one to help pull that shit through. The mechanical pump will come out as soon as I have a clean fuel system, which will take a bit of the load off the cam. As for the tank, I'll either get ahold of the equipment to cut a hole in the top and clean it out, find a new one, or maybe fab up a stainless tank for it. Then some day it will get a new carb, probably a weber if I'm lazy about it but ideally I'll get an Oppenheim manifold with an adapter for a 500 cfm Edelbrock (nice to have a rig old enough to be able to mod without DEQ shutting me down). The engine will stay as is as long as it still makes decent compression, with 1 3/4 headers and a Flowmaster and plenty of gas to burn I should have enough oomph to be happy. Maybe someday I'll bore the block out .040 and throw in some 9.5 pistons with roller everything and a RV cam but parts for an old L20 are pretty spendy ... so it will probably be a long way off. I went thru the front end last week, it was damn ugly under there and I had to scrape/pressure wash about 20 pounds of filth loose to find the zerk fittings. The hard grey grease with swamp water that came out tells me I probably have more work coming under there, and all the bushings are cracked and non functional so those will need to go bye-bye as well. As is, I avoid freeway lanes that are worn, and the shocks are so toasty that I catch air in corners if theres a dip in the road. New Rancho's all the way around and a steering stabalizer should fix that when the time comes. This is getting kind of depressing, I think I'll stop for now IP: Logged |
