Hey, post your sweet freeware programs here:

- SmartFTP - www.smartftp.com - best freeware ftp client

- WebWasher - www.webwasher.com - kickass program, eliminates pop-up advertising, erases banner ads from webpages, and, unlike proxomitron, has a nice interface and doesn't screw up websites.

What else you guys got that we could use?

IrfanView - The most electrifying freeware image viewer and converter. Supports tons of file types including animated GIF support. 'A mini Photoshop'

MusicMatch - A music jukebox that also allows you to convert .wav into .mp3 and vice versa. Download the free version.

Actually, Adaptec's 4.x CD Software does it on the fly, and I have yet to make a coaster CD with it. Just choose audio CD, and the mp3s you want to create it from, and it burns an audio cd. Sweet. No more winamp diskwriter for me!

Oh yeah, while I'm at it... www.xteq.com has a tweaking program called XSetup, sort of similar to PowerUp 98. (let's you configure all those obscure tweakable system settings for just about every WinOS, including XP.)

Free for personal use.

Freesco - Ever dreamed about purchasing that Linksys Router with 4 port Switch but was broke as hell? Well if you have an old PC with at least 8 megs of memory and a floppy drive, this is up your alley. Download this Linux based software and load it onto a floppy. There are so many things that Freesco can do - DHCP, DNS, WEB SERVE, etc.

I've tried another similar router software at www.BBIAgent.net but found that Freesco is much better in terms of configuration and support.

Wipe from IBM which is extra nice when you're doing a re-install, like I am, on old HDD which used to have lots of shit on them. This is particularly handy cos it just takes all partition info and says "fuck you" to it; I have (oh wait...had) a 5gig w/ 1 gig for win95 and 4 gigs for SuSE and i don't know if you've ever tried to use fdisk on a drive with linux on it, but it's...not fun. so. take WIPE and it's just about as good as hitting the fucking thing with a giant magnet.

Also on that page lined above is ZAP, which kills MBRs (I only used it once to get rid of BeOS but it did come in handy that one time.)

I recently snagged a bunch of utilities and progs that I normally put in when I first install a new system (getright, tweakUI, winamp, mozilla installer, winRAR, the analogue X stuff i mentioned above) and just dumped it all on a CD and it's come in a lot handier than I thought it would (i've done like 4 different windows installs this month, and a 2nd linux install).

I tried the latest version, they're right it doesn't work with XP, but if you go to download.com you can get an earlier version, which works with XP pretty well...

Apache webserver (*nix and Win32 flavors!)
War-FTP Daemon (most secure F-serv available for Win32)
DNS2go free dynamic DNS redirection service - run a client that automatically updates their nameserver with the correct IP address for your box, directed from a domain name you register OR from a free subdomain (ie jimbosworldorg.dns2go.com) - client will also auto-update your time to an atomic clock of your choice, if you want it to. Sweet!
