After playing the original Civilization oh those many years ago, and playing it OUT... Then playing Civ II until it was played OUT... I never thought I could be enamored of the series ever again. That was earlier today. Then on a whim, I actually installed the rip I snagged from Morpheus, and wh00p I'm having fun again. I've only played one game, which I lost. Me = final score of 203, Japanese = 205, and Chinese (those expansionistic bastardios) = like 290 or so. Fuckers, you'll get yours NEXT game. Anyway, if you're wondering, a few new levels of polish have been added to Civ 3. You can custom create trade deals, specifying how much money you'll give / want, which techs you'll give / want, extra commodities, etc. Two classes of settler, settler proper, and worker. (one to build cities, one to casts the spells that makes the grasses grow) While it is still easier to technologically outpace your competitors on the easier skill levels, this won't amount to much if they have twice as many cities at the end of the game. You'll lose, whereas in earlier Civ games, technology was a heavy scorer. All in all, I'm impressed, and this will probably figure heavily into my gaming schedule for at least a week or two. This and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which is just sweeeet. (Why are the BEST shooters those that ONLY [well, ok, mostly] have human opponents? Is it the 'not likely but sort of' aspect? -3 IP: Logged |

I have empire earth as well, and I didn't like it as much. Empire Earth can be thought of as an attempt to make Age of Empires feel more like Civilization, but in the process you lose the stuff that makes Age of Empires fun to play. I didn't much care for it.-3 IP: Logged |

What a colossal fuck up! Apparently there isn't any multiplayer of any kind with Civ III. I just checked the offical site ( www.civ3.com ) and there's no mention of it anywhere that I could see in my 90 seconds of clicking links. (features, and I checked the fix list in the patches section, nothing about multiplayer.)Seems like this sort of game would really benefit from multiplayer, you know? Oh well. -3 IP: Logged |

Personally, I quite enjoy Empire Earth. I like the scope of epochs, being able to build a prehistoric empire up through all the ages to modern times and beyond. I find it builds on quite a few of the concepts explored by the AoE series and throws in some interesting twists so you need to think up new strategies.Multiplayer EE is fun too, although most matches still turn into "build 100 tanks and flood your opponent." My issue with Civ III is the games take WTFL (Way Too Fucking Long) to play. A typical game seems to take 4 or more hours to play. I just don't have that kind of time. IP: Logged |

Haha, 4 or more hours. That's an understatement. I find Civ games are best enjoyed in installments.I mean, the only way to get a high civ score is to play on a large or huge world, and games that I play on small worlds can take 8 hours or more. One thing that really bugs me about Civ III is the AI of the worker class. When you set them to automatic, you get to watch them scurrying around your cities, converting all your irrigation into mines. While the extra production rate might be nice, it pisses me off when they do it to cities that NEED that food for maintenance. "starvation in paris!" bah. -3 IP: Logged |
