Ren and Stimpy are so so.. Really when you look at the wonderful plot/humor/hidden references within cartoons like Family Guy, Simpsons, and even futurama.. Things like Ren and Stimpy just don't seem as funny as they used to. Is it me or is Futurama a total hit and miss cartoon. Sometimes it is funny and sometimes it is just boring as fuck. IP: Logged |

TV = ART???the hell i say... i think television definitely has more potential for greatness than is being used at the moment. i will agree and say that shows like the simpsons are doing a better job of using the power of television than the majority of what's out there, but i think there is a lack of good programming...too much of it is mindless drivel. think about it, television reaches into pretty much everyone's home in the united states and many homes around the world, and what do "we" do with it? produce mindless sitcoms and cartoons that will take a passive aggressive jab at social and poltical goings-on every once in a while. people watch it and think "gee, that's funny cause it's ironic," or "gee that's funny cause it's true." and don't act because of it, or in spite of it. they sit waiting for more entertainment to be served to them.... until the PUBLIC airwaves are in the control of the PUBLIC, television will continue to feed us propaganda which the masses will devour without question. the internet is another great example of enormous potential for subversion of the status quo. along wiht this it has the power to nurture ideas and get the word out about movements. i think more people will turn to it for self-expression when all "traditional" means of communication have been exhausted. i had these kinds of opinions before reading culture jam. and i don't necessarily agree with all of his ideas...but...reading it only aided in my understanding of the problems in the media. too fewpeople have too much control over what we do and think. no one can claim to be uninfluenced by media unless they live in the wilderness amongst the trees and animals. blah blah blah....i'm soooo smart...blah blah blah listen to me cause i talk a lot....guh... read culture jam by kalle lasn..it's a bit preachy and a bit idealistic, but worth the read if some of what i said makes sense. this link is around here on penIs somewhere i think, but here it is anyway: adbusters (edit #1 for more words) (edit #2 for punctuation, the bit about the internet, and adbusters link and because i am not perfect) ------------------ everyone would be happier if they submitted to weekly government-administered enemas...including me. Personally, I don't watch enough TV to really care either way. And the stuff I do watch is meaningless drivel (Price is Right, for example), but who gives a fuck. I watch 'cause it's fun, and if I want to have deep philosophical ponderous thoughts, I can do it on my own time. As for whether the meaningless drivel influences me at all, whether negatively or positively... *shrug* It probably does. But when it comes to the "big issues" or whatever, the stuff where it MATTERS if I'm influenced, I don't have strong enough opinions for it to be an issue. I prefer to sit back on my lazy ass and watch the junk, because if I want to have opinions/beliefs/whatever of my own (which I do), I can go places other than TV to do so. Such as inside of my own head. Now why do I feel like I'm just ASKING for a flame? [This message has been edited by doomy304 (edited 01-30-2002).] IP: Logged |

Family Guy and Simpsons are far fucking better than Ren and Stimpy.. Futurama is about the same unless it is one of those rare "decent" episodes then futurama is better. IP: Logged |

Sorry dude, i'm still gonna have to disagree here...As i said, The Simpsons is COMPARABLE, but even family guy on its funniest episode doesn't touch the genius behind ren and stimpy. Futurama is absolute garbage (unless theres one of those very rare funny episodes) and isn't anywhere close.IP: Logged |

I suppose Ren & Stimpy is more of, shall we say..."an acquired taste" Its WAY less mainstream than its competitors, therefore the best episodes have probably been missed by the majority...Or at least that's what i'm going to keep telling myself. i think its great. IP: Logged |

The reason behind the Ren and Stimpy ... fuck up... was that the control of the show was taken away from the person who made the show (Spumco.com is the guy's site, they have a cartoon there the Goddamned George Liquor show) by Viacom [who pwns nickelodeon]. So many parents complained, they kicked out the russkies (i think they were russians), and hired staff that didn't make people as sick. Sven Hoek, the episode jumper is referring to, was one of Spumco's episodes... IP: Logged |
