Unfortunately, Cringely neglects to mention how the fuck you get enough bandwidth on the upside end TO pass on to all these people you're ever-so-cleverly providing these SDSL pipes to.IP: Logged |

HAHAHAHAHAHAUh, yeah. First you sneak into the (secure) Bell central office, then you locate the correct (secure) cage, then you break in (somehow), then you figure out their network well enough to know how to interface a DSL modem, find power for it, then connect that to the dry pair you ordered, and... hey, wait, this is starting to sound a bit unfeasible. Ok, I see your point, and I never said i 100% agreed with the guys plan... but this wiring between locations opens up at least a few possiblities. Maybe even between friends. You won't get free T1 access, but might be able to share dsl or something. As for me, I am stuck on a 28.8 dialup. Why? I will sum it up quickly...When I moved here from cleveland (to Eugene, OR), the first thing I asked my aartment "future apartment complex" is if they have broadband access. They promptly replied by YES! WE SURE DO! AT&T IS OUR PROVIDER" well. That was good enough for me. After I moved in, I soon found out that AT&T coined the phrase "broadband" to mean any type of cable tv/cable modem access. So ya, I have cable tv "ATT BROADBAND" but no cable high speed access. 28000ft. from telco does not allow me to have DSL and Sattelite socks for gaming. 28.8 all the way! (I am moving in a month to a place with cable access) ------------------ /\/arcus --If you're in a war, instead of throwing a hand grenade at some guys, throw one of those baby-type pumpkins. :: cough :: :: cough :: Um, don't delay your move or anything... that article was talking about establishing a, you got it, *DSL connection* over those dry pairs. Your distance from the CO + your friend's distance from the CO = total distance... so if you're too far from the CO for DSL, well, you're WAY too far away for the dry pair solution. nonono, tamarind != shit. similar, but not the same thing. as an aside, I used to eat tamarind directly from a tree when I was a kid. We lived like two blocks from the school I went to and my grandmother would walk me home and we'd always snag a couple from this tree that was right by the school. I don't know what the candy and paste and heroin looking package tasted like, but the fruit itself was alright, if a bit slimy. I like star apples more, though.
