Actually, it goes further than that.For optimal use of the 5htp, you need adequate sources of B3, B6, magnesium, and vitamin C, since all are necessary.
In fact, if you're short on B3 or B6, your body uses tryptophan to synthesize them, leaving very little tryptophan to make serotonin with. (But I take multivitamin supplement at least every OTHER day, and usually daily, so I'm not worried.)
Other good sources of tryptophan are turkey, almonds, bananas, chicken, eggs, lean meats. Turkey, chicken, almonds, and bananas are the richest sources, I believe, but you need a decent carbohydrate intake to absorb the tryptophan. (It bonds easily to carbs, best absorbtion method.)
